This book is great for children age 6 in first grade who are learning to read utilizing their sight words. My son was able to read all the stories in this book because it uses the same words used in his classroom. A real confidence builder. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children who are learning to read.

I could not use this book for my beginning first grader. For my 2 or 3 year old absolutely. This looks as a very basic book. I will keep it and hope to give it to someone else, I'm basically only out of my shipping cost since it was under a dollar.

My 6yo son is in 1st grade and is learning to read. This book has been perfect for him. It uses the sight words that he is learning in school, along with words that are very easy to sound out. He loves that he can actually read all of the words in the stories. If your child already reads pretty well, this book will probably be too easy. However, if your child struggles with reading like mine does, this book is perfect to help with reading practice and to build confidence in his reading ability.

This reader includes complete picture books such as:"The Bunnies and the Fox" by David McPhail and "A Surprise for Zig Bug" by Pam Munoz Ryan.We liked the way it includes reading about math and science. It also gives readers an opportunity to experience a variety of genres: fantasy, realistic fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The publishers were smart to make it less heavy and cumbersome for little hands.

I'm really loving this book for my kindergarten daughter. The stories are very simple and engaging and helping her to recognize simple words. I hope to purchase more of the series in the future as she progresses Love the hardback cover too!.

I am using this with my first grade and kindergarten granddaughters. The first grader is almost done with this book, while the kindergartener will begin when her sister is done. The first grader is assigned a book-in-a-bag on Monday & Tuesday, and then allowed to choose a book for Wednesday and Thursday. I am using this for the Wed-Thur books. I like having a reading series that builds on the words they learn and a phonics program. They use a phonic program, but no organized reading program--just books at their "level." I really like this series, and have bought all the first grade books now. My first grader is beginning to zoom through these stories now, and developing confidence in sounding out words. Besides stories, they also introduce poetry, math shapes, a county fair, woodland animals, etc. to enrich their knowledge of other areas of their education. In the beginning an adult may need to do most the reading of these, but by the end of the book the child will be able to read these with very little help.

This is a nicely compiled anthology filled with short, age appropriate stories for young readers. The format of the book is well done, including a word introduction section that pulls out the key words the reader will need to know. It makes putting a word wall together much easier. There is also a pre-reading story, which is shorter in length than the main story. It helps warm the reader up and practice using the new words. The main stories themselves are written by some quite famous authors. Every story is supported with appropriate images to aid in comprehension.

This book may have been what was considered 1st grade years ago, but not today. If your student has been read to since birth, or even went to Kindergarten at a regular school then this would not be a challenge. This is also a lot shorter then expected. This wouldn't last a whole year of home school. This works better for Kindergarten or even pre-school depending on the child. The pictures are vivid and the decodeable words are great for beginner readers. I do like the questions at the end they do touch on the skills need to learn. I'm gonna hold on to this to teach my 2 year old.
