We've been doing "First Language Lessons" grammar, but it ends at level 4, so we decided to get Easy Grammar after all the glowing reviews. My first doubt in this program began at the first page when the intro asks that we jump around to different units. It says, " Continue through the preposition unit (p.1)...Then teach the capitalization unit (p. 265)...After completing [this] unit, I suggest that you return to the verb unit (p. 45)." Why not just organize the book in the order we should do it, instead of having us jump around. I thought this annoying, but manageable. Then we get to the first page of real instruction and my teacher's manual introduces prepositional phrases. It gives us the Webster's Dictionary definition which is convoluted and confusing. They write, "By definition, a preposition is a relation or function word...that connects a lexical word, usually a noun or pronoun, or a syntactic construction to another element of the sentence, as to a verb, to a noun, or to an adjective." We are warned that the definition is so complex that it may confuse students. It says, "If you choose to define preposition, do so very carefully." Are you kidding me!? How about showing us how to teach it so that it isn't confusing. This is where I pull out the knowledge learned from FLL grammar and remind the child that a preposition is a word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence. If I hadn't done FLL I wouldn't have had a clue how to teach them! Then we go through pages and pages of practicing finding the prepositional phrases.
