Despite its title, the A+ Exam Cram, sixth edition written by David L. Prowse and published by Pearson, lies somewhere between a "cram book" and a fuller, richer guide for those seeking to prepare for the A+ 220-801 and 220-802 exams. For those relatively new to the IT field, the book covers all of the CompTIA exam objectives; each chapter opens with an outline of the exam topics covered as well as the specific objectives (download CompTia's exam objective guide from their website, [...]). For those who have IT experience, the book is designed so chapters are independent; focus on those chapters in which you need a refresher or use it as a quick reference for basic information. Those new to the IT field may be tempted to jump to chapter one and forego the introduction. I caution against that because the author charts certification roadmaps, discusses chapter format and introduces you to graphical alerts that help you hone in on important tips. Although the book covers well the sheer breadth of the CompTIA exam topics, it is not a replacement for more detailed texts that take you more deeply into the workings of PC hardware and operating systems as well as newer technologies such as mobile devices and tablets. As a "cram" text, you'll find that the book over-delivers on what it promises. Each chapter provides succinct and fairly detailed information on the topic and the author often cites additional resources such as Microsoft Technet, user groups as well as his own website. Take advantage of outside resources to expand your knowledgebase and gain an understanding of the kinds of issues others face in the field (e.g., troubleshooting device issues, common errors, workarounds, etc.).
