It it just perfect for people trying to learn linux and also practice for the CompTIA Linux i give that a five stars. But i think this book should also come with the answers for the questions. You never know if you are 100% right on the questions until you see them.
This is a good book - well written and easy to understand but it will not prepare you for the exams by itself. I have 10 years on the job UNIX (AIX/IRIX/SunOS) admin experience and 1+ year on the job with Linux. I studied for several months using this book and daily hands on at home and work - I passed the first test with an embarrassingly low score and failed the 2nd test. There were no big surprises on the exam but I was not prepared for the level of detail needed to pass and I didn't memorize as much as I should have. The book does a great job of explaining core concepts and touching on all the topics but you need to do additional research and dig into the details... and be willing to memorize a bunch of things you would never bother to memorize if you were not attempting to get certified. Also, the questions at the end of each chapter will help you test your reading of the book but are NOT similar to what you find on the exam. Same goes for the CertBlaster questions... I was getting 95 - 100% on the CertBlasters and still failed the test. All in all, I would still recommend this book as a starting point, will continue to use it, and am retaking the 2nd exam in a few weeks.
This is a great introduction to Linux for anyone looking to expand their knowledge outside of Windows and into Linux systems administration. The book assumes you have no prior knowledge of Linux, you only need to be a technically minded person who understands basic IT concepts such as user permissions, file sharing, and networking. The material is not too wordy. All chapters are straight-forward, to the point, and full of hands-on exercises. There was no point at which I felt the material was over-explaining or providing more information than someone new to Linux can handle. Just about everything printed here are fundamental concepts that all beginners to Linux should know if they want to get into systems administration and can be on the Linux+ test.I only knock it down a star because the book had some great chapter-end questions but did not seem to provide the answers for them for someone to check how they are doing. But overall I always recommend this book and test to my technicians who are looking to get themselves up to an administrative level in a Linux environment.
The content itself is well written, thorough, and easy to understand. However, the index is a joke at 3.25 pages of two columns each for the two volumes combined, making this book OK for an introduction, but utterly useless for a reference. The fact that there is no key for the end-of-chapter questions also limits the value of this book as a study guide.
