This certification study-resource from Authors: Sierra & Bates is a winner! As someone who recently succeeded at the SCJP 1.5 exam, i can vouch for this book. The following review is thus for those interested in preparing for the exam and not quite sure whether this book is the right tool for the job.I am a beginner in Java, interested in becoming a Sun Certified professional java Enterprise Architect ie: SCEA. I decided to start the trek to the java-technology apex with the SCJP programmer certification, whilst actively preparing for the SCEA accreditation.I used the following books in preparing for the SCJP exam:(Book 1.) SCJP Study Guide - (SCJP SG )(Book 2.) SCJP Exam for J2SE 5 - (SCJP E5) (Sanghera)(Book 3.) Agile Java - (a 5 star book!!)(Book 4.) Head First Java - (a 5 star book!!)Note: (due to review real-estate constraints, i shall limit this review to (Book 1.) ie: [The SCJP Study Guide] - (the current book in question). you'll find a review for (Book 2.
I passed the exam today (92%). Admittedly I'm an experienced Java programmer, but this book has been a great, perhaps indispensable, help. This is perhaps the best book for SCJP preparation for several reasons. First, the breadth and depth are just right for the exam, so I got to learn exactly what is required. Java 5 is such a huge language that one can easily get into one specific area (such as generics and collections) and waste a lot of time there (too much depth); there is also the danger that an experienced programmer can still miss certain language features not often used in his day job without the guidance of a book like this (deficiency in breadth.) Second, this book has almost no errors -- a necessity for a detail oriented exam such as SCJP, because nobody can effectively learn if the book's description of complex language features is inaccurate, ambiguous, or even incorrect. This book is meticulous, although the writing style is not like an academic book. Finally, the MasterExams accompanying the book are as helpful as the self test problem in the book. They are a bit more difficult than what appears in the real exam, so don't get discouraged if you don't get a high score from them. There is also a widely acclaimed book, "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification" (for JDK 1.4.) I did also read that book, and I like it too. However, here're some caveats: first, PGJC's latest version is for JDK 1.4, so for 310-055 you need to supplement it with some other resources, such as THIS book; second, PGJC delves into certain language issues that are "deeper" than what the exam requires. Understanding these issues is certainly very helpful, but if you are not already very familiar with Java language, you may feel overwhelmed by the level of complexity.
