I work in a Pediatric Dental practice. I ordered this book for my son and for his class, my niece and nephews. I threw them all away b/c they show the needle, which NEVER happens and is one way to get your child to be afraid of going to the dentist. In the end, Little Critter gets a lollipop for being so good, and granted the jar in the background says "Sugar Free", preschool aged kids cannot read. I was very disappointed b/c I love Little Critter, but not a good idea to get your child excited about going to the dentist.
Mayer has done it again! Delightful pictures and simple text prepare any child for their first dentist trip. My two year old insisted on hearing the story dozens of times before her first appointment and was prepared once we arrived at the office. The only problem we had was that our dentist is not a rabbit!
I found this book to be a little too much for my 4 year old. I did not like the fact that the book says 'it will not hurt' and shows a picture of a needle for novacaine shot. I realize the shots are probably inevitable, but telling a child it will not hurt is unrealistic. I should have read the content before I purchased the book.
Got this for my 3 year old's first dentist visit. Horrendous book. A 3 year old doesn't need to know about cavities and shots. too scary!! Plus the illustrations are not nice to look at. I would not recommend this book to anybody.
This book was perfect for my grandson. We read it to him before he went to the dentist and we took the book with us and my grandson was able to point out the things in the book that was in the dentist office. Mr. Mayer made the story realistic because not every dentist visit is perfect you may have a cavity.
I bought this book for my 6 year old, after he developed anxiety about going to the dentist. He didn't have any problems before, but then he had to have a tooth extracted and the anxiety went crazy. Earlier this year he needed sealants, and he refused to even open his mouth for the dentist to LOOK. His cleaning was coming up last week and I wanted to help ease his anxieties and remind him that he doesn't have to be afraid. He enjoyed this book and loved that he could relate to little critter getting a cavity filled, just like he has. He did well at his appointment, and I give some credit to this book - it opened up the conversation and helped him to feel acknowledged. As always, Mercer Mayer did an awesome job. The book arrived in excellent condition and right on time.
I remember reading Mercer Mayer as a child & loved him, particularly the artwork in his books. However, this book isn't one of my favorites. I bought this book in preparation for my 3-yr-old's first trip to the dentist. Some of the terminology is incorrect, such as the "nurse," in the story which should actually be a dental hygienist. It's a bit outdated, since many of the practices in the book are no longer used by dentists. It's a decent book to add to your child's library, even if it's not a "must have." You can't beat the price.
My 5 year old niece loves little critter books. The messages are really good and this one in particular did make going to the dentist slightly less scary. And she is TERRIFIED of the dentist. Reading it to her opened up a dialogue about what exactly she was afraid of, etc. It helped her come up with the words to express what was going on in her head. I love that.
