Really, 4 1/2 stars, but that's not an option.Having followed and enjoyed the author's blog for a while, off and on, I was intrigued to hear she'd branched out into YA, and fantasy no less, a combination I couldn't resist. I typically don't read ebooks--it drives me bonkers--but I willingly did for this book, and it was worth it. (I missed the bit about it being available in paperback since I clicked on the link to buy it so quickly.)Things I liked:The names. Sometimes, it seems to me, the naming conventions of fantasy can go between two extremes: A bit over-the-top or "Maeginne...wait, that's just Megan re-spelled". The names in this book found that happy middle ground and they worked. The world. At times I wasn't completely sure if she was describing something from our world that I hadn't seen before, or if it was just explained so well that it felt real. I want to taste some of the fruits. And wear the clothes. I want to visit this world, and that is a huge recommendation from me.Hearing from different perspectives. There's a lot going on inside all the characters. That could get a little overwhelming at times, but it also felt very real. The shift of character perspective was refreshing. I love getting those different points of view. The characters. I got frustrated with some of them, but in a good way--because they were realistic. I also felt compassion for them, which to me is telling of whether a character is likable or not, and not just if they're nice or fill-in-good-quality-here. (You know what I mean?
