Art & Beauty #1 is back in print after five years, and in a new format chosen by Crumb! Featuring 35 portraits of Crumb's ideal feminine forms, each accompanied with annotations regarding that woman's beauty. A manifesto of sorts, Art & Beauty is preoccupied with the same figures that have been at the root of Crumb's id-reflective art from the start, but presents each with rare tenderness and thoughtfulness. Crumb's artwork has never looked better, and there is little doubt that he had as much fun writing and drawing this book as you will have reading it. Originally published by Kitchen Sink Press in 1996, Art & Beauty #1 has been re-formatted to standard comic book size and re-shot from the original art to Crumb's specifications, improving on the original, for this Fantagraphics edition.

I found my copy at a comic shop, buried under comics unrelated; perhaps someone tried to hide it for later purchase! The comicbook gods smiled upon me! ;)This is a side of Crumb I've never seen, the drawings are (as always) great, heavy card stock for covers and thick paper for the pages. He is right on with the words 'TO UPLIFT & ENLIGHTEN', its the words that make the book different. He still has a thing for thick/strong built girls, not the size 0 you see in fashion mags, thank you very much!He quotes great men from Rudolf Arnheim to Da Vinci; many drawings have multiple quotes from various artists. Its well put together, he really put much thought into the book. It gave me the boost to return to drawing (I was really good in middle school, changed to photography). Its a book you will return to often; and may have you lookup the men behind the quotes to see why R. Crumb chose them for his drawings.I'd love to find the second book!
