This 10th volume presents Donald Duck comics from 1951 and as always Carl Barks produces consistent, high quality stories. The first tale includes the initial introduction of the Beagle Boys. They have just a single panel, non-speaking appearance which is ironic given that the volume is called, ‘Terror of the Beagle Boys’ The story summary synopsis pointed out that in this first appearance the Beagle Boys are wearing colored beanies and colorful shirts reminiscent of Donald’s nephews as if they were criminal versions of the boys. The next story has Donald and his nephews in Riviera where apparently half the population is composed of spies. The most interesting feature of this story is that all of the humans are drawn as humans rather than the strange animal/human hybrids that Barks was known for drawing. The slightly anthropomorphized animalish human look was imposed on Barks by Disney and apparently this was his last attempt to draw humans without snouts and dog ears. Personally I always found Barks animal/human hybrids weird like something out of Dr. Moreau but even these regular humans look a bit off. He probably should have just gone all in with regular anthropomorphized characters like most funny animal artists did. There are three 28 page stories including ‘Dangerous Disguise’, ‘No Such Varmint’ and ‘Old California’. The rest are 10 pages stories and for whatever reason this particular span of time has no single page gags. It is with ‘No Such Varmint’ that the book gets going. Donald decides he wants a career in snake charming (to the embarrassment of his nephews) and I had to laugh as Donald blissfully pursued his dream even as the boys tried to steer him into a more respectable field.

Since I started contributing to the Fantagraphics reprint books of the comics of Carl Barks, I have stopped writing reviews of them on . But I thought I would make an exception for this book. The Terror of the Beagle Boys is not the title I would have chosen for this book, but it is an excellent book, containing some of Barks' very best work and one of his own favorites of his work, Donald Duck in Old California. This story has a beautiful, sensitive, and sympathetic new coloring job done by Joseph R Cowles, the likes of which Barks rarely if ever had in the 10 cent comic books. And it is a terrific story. But this story is only one of many gems. This book also marks a milestone. With the publication of this volume, volume 10, Fantagraphics has in print the run of volumes 5 through 14. With that, all of Carl Barks' Disney comic books submitted between December of 1946 and March of 1953, including the creation of Uncle Scrooge in 1947, and also all issues of the Uncle Scrooge title through issue #12, submitted in June of 1955 are available. This period includes the high point in creativity and quality of writing and drawing in Barks' career as a comic book writer and artist, particularly starting in 1948, and includes a majority of Barks' very best work, although there is also much excellent work both before and after this period. The other reason for my writing this review is to cross-advertise my own new book, The Carl Barks Index: A Concordance of the Comics of Carl Barks, recently published and available on . My book indexes the ten Fantagraphics books now available, for content by Barks.
