I finally got up the nerve to tackle the Old Testament, from beginning to end. After countless failed attempts, my confidence was not high, though my commitment was solid. Past experience taught me that I wouldn't be successful using the Bible alone: I just didn't have the historical framework nor the attention span necessary to tackle the material. I decided to supplement my reading with Skousen's series ("The First 2000 Years", "The Third Thousand Years", and now this one, "The Fourth Thousand Years"), as well as Josephus' "Antiquity of the Jews". It has taken me eight months of daily reading to get up to Elijah, but what an incredible labor of love! I finally feel as though I am developing a basic mastery of Old Testament scripture, preparing a solid foundation upon which to build. I couldn't recommend this series (and Josephus too, for that matter) highly enough. Both Skousen and, surprisingly, Josephus, write plainly enough for us lay-folks to understand, but is detailed enough--especially if you put the footnotes and reference material he provides to good use--to satisfy even the more sophisticated readers. This series covers the events that occurred during each critical era in depth, giving each individual mentioned in the Bible his or her due, explains the history and culture of each region and people, and explains doctrinal points from the Latter-Day perspective. There should be no reason for mainstream Christians to be put off by this; Skousen makes it very clear when he is writing about widely-accepted historical fact and when he isn't; the bulk of his references is from mainstream Biblical scholars and their work.I have finally discovered for myself why the Bible is considered the most influential book ever written.
