Maisy the Mouse has always been popular at my house. My girls have always loved reading Lucy Cousins’ stories about the sweet little mouse and her friends. Many of the Maisy stories have simple plots and are geared towards babies and toddlers, but there is a series of Maisy books called “First Experiences” that are intended for preschoolers. Young children can see what it is like to go to the museum, preschool, and even the hospital with Maisy. In Maisy Learns to Swim, children follow Maisy from the time that she packs her bag for the lesson, to the locker room, and into the pool. Maisy gets in slowly because the water feels cold, something that many children can relate to. A friendly teacher named Poppy has the students kick with kickboards and blow bubbles. After the lesson, Maisy and her friends have a shower and a snack.Maisy is joined by her friends Eddie the Elephant and Tallulah the yellow bird. There are also a couple of “extras” who don’t have names, but appear in the locker room and the lesson: a penguin, a chicken, and a lemur. Lucy Cousins must have an odd fixation with lemurs, because one has appeared as a background character in three of her recent books. I can’t help but wonder if this is the same lemur or if there is a large lemur population in Maisy’s area. The book does a wonderful job of walking children through the process of a swim lesson, and I appreciate that it includes the before and after process as well. The book includes little details, like Eddie wearing goggles and Maisy floating by “pushing her belly up to the ceiling and stretching her arms out like a starfish”.The illustrations are bright and colorful. Lucy Cousins has a vivid child-like style of drawing, and the illustrations are very appealing.
