I like the Molly books very much. They are some of the best books I've ever read. Valerie Tripp did a wonderful job telling a story about a young girl during World War II. Molly has an adventuresome spirit. I think just about any girl would enjoy the American Girls Collection. They are a big page turner. I could read an entire book in one day if I had the time. I've already read the complete Samantha series, which is my favorite so far. I never really liked to read until my grandmother gave me the American Girls books.
I think this book is awesome! During war time, if you had a birthday like Molly did, you could still get a cake and special birthday presents at a party. Molly even got a puppy! During WWII, some English girls had to move out of their homes and away from their parents because England was too dangerous for them. Germany was bombing London. Emily was such a girl, and she thought about things very differently than Molly. Molly learned that it was hard to leave your family and go to a stranger's house. She also learned that war is not a game. It is very real for those who have to suffer through it. For Emily, nothing about the war was exciting, including blackout drills. You could compare Emily's life to the lives of children in Israel and Lebanon, where there is fighting now. It makes me feel very sad for the kids who are living there.
Each night, I read a chapter to my daughter, age 5 1/2, and my son, age 7. One reason they can't wait for me to return from my business trips is so they can find out what's going to happen to Molly next. My kids really enjoy the stories and all the characters. I think the writing is pretty good - appropriate and understandable for children - and the stories are fun and well-paced. "A peek into the past" at the end of each book is also fun to read with my kids. It's nice to show them how people lived in those days.I never thought my kids would actually look forward to bedtime, but now they do!
My 1st grade daughter recently inherited some American Girl dolls and has become obsessed with them, so I bought her some books to go along with her dolls. She devoured this book series in no time. She loved the part at the end of each book where it has photos and talks about what life was like during the time period.
Six books in this boxed set will provide our 9 year old with lots of reading fun. Love the individual books in the slipcase , rather than the large "all in one volume" format of some of our other American Girl books. Sometimes that gets a little overwhelming to a young reader. Set during World War II, Molly is one of our favorites. It is easy for our school girl to learn the history of that time, while she imagines her grandmother in the same situations as Molly.... father away in the war, Victory Gardens, and mothers working outside the home for the first time. American Girl always delivers quality and this does not disappoint.
My grand daughter loved the set of books. She was very excited to receive them. She loved the game that was enclosed. I only wish it had an actual die with it rather than a paper one. But this is a great set of books for any little girl that loves the American Girl dolls.
I think this book was great! I learned that just because your father is out fighting in the war, it doesn't mean that Christmas or any type of holiday has to be ruined. You can still have fun, no matter what. Molly's family still put up their Christmas tree and lights to celebrate. Also, if a box comes in the mail and it says "Keep it hidden until Christmas", keep it hidden and don't ruin the surprise. Molly and her sister and brothers enjoyed sledding in the snow in 1944 like I do now. Then they came back in to enjoy hot cocoa and a warm breakfast, just like I do. Even though it was war time, Molly still got what she wished for.
I don't think you can wrong with the American Girl books. The stories are wonderful. If you can't afford the hard cover these are just as wonderful. Keep them in the box and the books will stay nice and neat for many hours of reading. We especially love the Molly books because it is close enough in history that our daughters can relate (this happened when grandma was a girl).
