I have both of Jon's Commentaries that are currently available; Vol I of the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. In the past I've used primarily the commentaries from William Barclay. What I can tell you first of all is, if you're looking for doctoral thesis type commentary, get Barclay. If however, you're looking for relevant, easy to read work that provides the background and depth 90% of Christian's would want, YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH JON'S WORK!I already have Vol. II of the Old Testament on Pre-order.God Bless!
You won't find a better application commentary available anywhere. You may find some good "Bible" commentaries, but not "application" commentaries. Mr. Courson brings the verses to everyday application. Simply awesome. I have the New Testament version and cannot wait till the last book is available!
I was introduced to Jon Courson several years ago. I began reading his down to earth commentary with my daily verse-by-verse devotional readings. I was amazed at the insight brought to me through this commentary. I began reading it to my then 18 year old daughter. For the first time - she fell in love with the reading of the scripture. We purchased the NT volume for sons not living for the Lord. When they began reading - we saw a remarkable change in their lives. I cannot say enough positive words regarding these commentaries. It has strengthened my understanding and love for the Word of God. You will be blessed immeasureably through the reading of God's Word with an understanding that should thrill your soul.
I have not finished this book yet; however, I cannot seem to put it down. I love it and plan on getting the others when I finish Volume 1. Jon Courson brings up so many details as you read through the Bible that are unique and insightful, yet solidly backed with Scripture. I am learning so much. I love John Macarthur and R.C. Sproul for exegetical studies of the Bible. This, theologically, seems to be in line with them. The difference, however, is that it is soo easy to read, and you can pick it up almost like you would a favorite book and feel you've just listened to an excellent sermon. The book goes verse by verse through the Bible, printing the passages in bold (usually 1/2 to 2 verses). Below each passage, Jon comments and gives insight into the Hebrew meaning, explains the scripture and consistently shows how the Old Testament verses all point to Christ. He always backs up what he "says" with Scripture references. He writes as if he is simply talking to you, so again, it is quite easy to read even though it is full of deep truth.
I love the Courson's Applications. I use several commentaries for Bible Study. Some are very complex interpretations going back to the original Greek. When I turn to Courson's I always find a fresh view of what I'm studying. His commentary is Biblically based, but, his conversational style is easy to relate to. I give it 4 stars only because there are times when he wanders so far with the commentary that I find myself skipping over those parts. That said, I highly recommend his books.
If you are like me into God's word on a daily basis, this has to be in your collection of books. I got all 3 volumes. I absolutely love it. Courson breaks down each scripture, and his commentary is understandable and down to earth. I love having these in my home.
I love that the full Scriptures are in bold print with Jon Courson's comments in regular print. He makes the passages very practical for every day living now and adds some interesting personal stories as well as information about the customs and times of the Bible stories to better understand them. He uses the King James Version which is what I grew up with. Anyone choosing to use another version will enjoy this for the applications that are current.
Jon Courson's commentary on the entire Bible (old and new testament)isuplifting and inspiring. He takes each verse and brings it to "life"with historic references and application to our everyday life. It's agreat read and a great reference.
