A very good children's atlas, but not quite good enough for me to give 5 stars.Every map is on double page spreads. This means the middle of the map is in the "gutter" area where the two pages meet the binding. Many important cities and other map features are hard to see because of this. Examples of cities whose printed names are cut off by the gutter: Newark, Minneapolis, Djibouti City. Many other important ones have legible names but are located too close to the gutter to study their surrounding area. Examples of these are Ottawa, New York City, The Hague, Rome, New Delhi, Rangoon.The amount of space given to each territory often bears no relation to its size or importance. In general, Europe and North America get disproportionate attention, while Africa and Asia are relatively neglected. Examples: Mexico gets its own 2-page spread, but Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines et al. are crammed together in a Maritime SE Asia 2-page spread. No African country gets its own 2-page spread.In case of disputed territories, the maps usually show the de facto boundaries and briefly note the existence of the dispute. A few of these are missed (e.g. Abkhazia, Somaliland). Among partially recognized states, only Kosovo and Taiwan are treated as countries, missing the other widely recognized ones, Western Sahara and Palestine. Those omissions look like political decisions.The CD that comes with the atlas is a nice bonus. Unfortunately, the publishers did not make the most of the capabilities of a CD. In the book, some large countries (e.g. China) take more than one set of 2-page spreads. One would expect that in the CD version these maps would not need to be split, since it's possible to zoom in and out and scroll over them.
