The book is brilliant in the design, as it seemed sure to be since the engineering is by Matthew Reinhart, but the pages appear drab because of the muddy colors with which they are printed and the dull paper stock used. Before writing this review, I considered the possibility that the color choices were made to give the book an antique look or for some other artistic reason. Finally, I decided that if that was the objective, it failed. The mechanics on each page are phenomenal, the little side pop-ups are delightful, the illustrations are appropriately cute, but the book, overall, misses the mark. I'm happy to have a signed copy in my collection because Mr. Reinhart is a true genius, and just maybe the manufacturer is at fault here!Update: I notice that the review I wrote for A Pop Up Book of Nursery Rhymes that is NOT the Limited Edition shows up on both sites. The Limited Edition is not as is pictured at this site. It comes in beautiful blue cloth hardcover and a matching slipcase. The book cover has a folder with a special pop-up and the author's signature, with the number of the edition handwritten. The Limited Edition books from Reinhart/Sabuda have become very valuable because of the limited number that are available.
I absolutely love this book. I bought it for my nephew for Christmas. He was 10 months old at Christmas and loved the book. There are so many nursery rhymes with classic pictures. The book is well made and opens and closes with the pop ups easily. There are a couple of pop ups that require assistance from a sibling or parent, but not to the point that he can't enjoy the book on his own. This really brings the rhymes to life and is a favorite storytime book. All your favorites are in here ready to share with a new generation.
My 13 month old likes looking at books and the nursery rhymes and games we play, so I thought she might enjoy a pop-up edition of nursery rhymes. But this one is insane... I feel like the creators of this book must have a PhD in Paper Engineering. It is very elaborate, and the nursery rhymes literally springing to life out of the pages. There are also at flaps to flip on each page, and each flap has more nursery rhymes. I'm slightly disappointed that the text is small and some of the rhymes are extremely condensed and cut short. I feel like the design of the book somewhat got in the way of the content of it. Luckily I have another book for extended versions of the nursery rhymes that is more suited for reading/singing to a little child. Unfortunately, I think the book was too elaborate for a young toddler to appreciate. But I will definitely be keeping this book high on her bookshelf for a time when she is ready for the itsy bitsy spider and the water spout to spring out at her.
Intricate pop-ups illustrate well-known nursery rhymes. It is a pleasure to read this book for the young or for the older, more sophisticated collector/reader. The engineering of these pop-ups is truly amazing.
Young children love the novelty of a 3D book and this was durable, colorful, and magical. My three year old grandaughter and I loved it.
Pros: Great art work and lots of fun for story time.Cons: The Book is Much smaller than expected. due to its complex design, a lot of the pop-up sections already started ripping out upon the first opening.
This is the coolest baby book I have ever seen! I was searching for a pop up book for my little one and decided to try this one. There are stories within stories and pop-ups within pop-ups! Are you kidding me!? Genius! Haha doesn't get better than this!
