great book very clean no bad language so refreshing to read a really good book without all the trash talk great author
1899 Eastern OregonAundy, 21, is a feisty character with plenty of common sense and courage. She deals with life as it comes. She accepts a mail-order marriage proposal and leaves Chicago for Oregon. She is pleasantly surprised when she meets Erik, a farmer of 39 with a kind manner and clearly very good intentions of being a good husband to her. As the book description says, she very quickly becomes a widow and the start of the book is very sad.She decides to work hard to keep the farm in Erik's honour and faces several hurdles, from men who won't work for a woman to threats and attempts to drive her out.She is helped by her neighbours, the Nash family and develops a bond with Garrett Nash, the son. She never wants to marry again, convinced that she brings only bad luck. The story is centred around their growing feelings for each other and the people in the community, with plenty of events and turns to keep the plot interesting.
Terrific descriptions of the Eastern Oregon area around Pendleton. The author makes the land, weather, and seasons an essential part of this fascinating story! The characters, including Aundy, are people I genuinely came to care for and want to know more about! I even identified with many things about Aundy, I would know her in an instant if I encountered this amazing young woman on the street! Her independence, insecurities, courage, sense of humor and wonderful loving heart make her a delightful new heroine! The sense of community draws you in and is also an integral part of the story. This book also provides an accurate picture of many aspects of life in the West at the turn of the century! Several reviewers have summarized the story so I will not take up space doing that, what i will do is recommend this book highly! Can hardly wait for the next in the series, Catarina. I'm going to download the entire Grass Valley series now...
This book is incredible. I loved every minute of it. The development of the characters was awesome, deep and heartfelt. I felt I knew them very well. The H/h were a match made in heaven and I admired the strength of Aundy along with her bold decisions. I also appreciate the Christian values that were upheld in this book. The author did a superb job of descriptive writing as I could literally see, in my mind's eye, every scene. Can't wait to read Book 2.This is a must read that I highly recommend. If you are looking for a clean romantic read...look no further.
What sets this story apart is humor, as it adds a bit of clean spice to a wonderfully written love story. I hope this series continues onward when the little sister arrives, especially if she falls in love with the handsome Deputy Sheriff.
Here are the good points:1) a twist on the usual mail-order bride story when the groom is killed almost immediately in a wagon accident leaving city girl Aundy with a ranch she has no idea what to do with2) good romantic sparks between Aundy and Garrett3) dialogue good--at least when it's coming out of the main charactersHere are the not so good points:1) Overall writing quality could be improved2) POV bounces around like a ping pong ball with nothing to give us a heads up to the change3) Villain is very one-dimensional in dialogue and action--extremely unbelievable at the end.He actually spills his whole plan and every rotten deed he has ever done while he thinks she is unconscious. He is also too stupid to know the difference between real gold and pyrite4) Storyline needs improvement for believability as she tried to make it more complicated5) No real character development. Aundy's one bit of growth was one thought: "So much for thinking I could defend myself."6) Aundy keeps talking about this sister she wants to come live with her, but then nothing happens with that at all. Unless she is going to contribute to the story in some way (even in correspondence or something), the sister should have just been left out.7) one character is only there to try and misdirect us from the real villain (he's again one-dimensionally evil with no real explanation or a chance to see him grow)The only thing that kept me reading was the relationship between Garrett and Aundy, and that's just not enough to be awarded very many stars.
The writing in this book could be improved DRAMATICALLY if the author didn't start almost every sentence with a prepositional phrase. It gets tedious to read when the flow of the text doesn't vary. Also, some good editing to make sure that each and every word is necessary would go a long way - for example, in one sentence, the author wrote that the main character went back into the house to take something from outside into the bedroom; however, the bedroom is located necessarily inside the house and those extra few lines were unnecessary and distracting. At this point, I'm not sure exactly what compelled me to finish the book - it wasn't the storyline - I believe it was wondering why so many people gave it good reviews.
