I wanted to love the "Atlas of Adventures" activity book, but there are too many flaws that make it less appealing and child-friendly than I was hoping for. The "Atlas of Adventures" is published by Wide Eyed Editions. Here I will be comparing it to Big Picture Press's "Maps", another large-format, unconventional activity book based on a gorgeously illustrated encyclopaedic picture book of the same title – and a book pairing which strongly influenced my decision to buy both the hardcover "Atlas" and two copies of this "Atlas" activity book.The first problem with the "Atlas" activity book is that the illustrations run right to the middle seam. As such they are next to impossible for children to color in completely — or even to view without bending the spine backwards. My workaround for this was going to be tearing the pages out, one by one, so that they could lie flat and be easier for coloring. (I was going to do this anyway, so that I could re-order the pages and tailor them to fit our "worldschooling" curriculum for next year.) This brings me to two more problems! One (more a nuisance than a problem): Unlike the "Maps" activity book, the pages here don't have perforated edges, so I'd have to cut them out with a razor blade or scissor edge. Two (much more serious): Most of the illustrations cover two pages, so pulling them out of their book form destroys the continuity of the illustrations.But leave them in the book, and they are difficult or impossible to color completely!! See the dilemma here??My biggest disappointment of all, however, and speaking to the content rather than the format of the book, is that this "Atlas of Adventures" activity book is far less open-ended than I was hoping.
