The Children’s Activity Atlas is jam-packed with information about our world, and includes maps of the continents, geographical facts, cultural snippets such as monuments, food, and favorite pasttimes, national flags, animals found in various regions, and so much more. This atlas is designed to be visual more so than informational. That is, there are many images of animals, monuments, food, and so on instead of text descriptions. The textual information is very succinct making this a great choice for younger children just beginning to show interest in their world.What makes the Children’s Activity Atlas special are the three add-ons to the main book. First, there is a “passport” included in a special pocket located on the inside front cover. This passport serves as an interactive guide to reading the book and expands on the images found on the maps by providing additional information. What I really found great was that children are introducted to Map Reading 101 by having to mark a “grid reference” from the map into their passport. Brilliant!! Once a child is done exploring a continent, they can put a “sticker” showing they have completed their exploration of that continent.The second add-on is a series of stickers found at the back of the book. There are three types of stickers: 1. The flags of each nation from around the world (yes, I do believe every last one is there!); 2. Animals, monuments, or other cultural aspects specific to a nation that children can paste in the right spot (the page reference is provided); and, 3. Stickers of completion for each continent to be used in conjunction with the passport. The flags alone should keep children busy for hours!The third add-on is a series of “postcards” which can be detached and actually mailed out.
