This is a beautiful story. I'm a young engineer working on NASA's Orion spacecraft and Planetes was the first manga I ever read. Planetes is as much about the present as it is about the future. Space is a dream that is centuries old and is shared by millions. With all the current talk about Mars, commercial spaceflight, and reusable rockets, our future in space seems inevitable and nothing but good. The history of spaceflight is not all peaches and rainbows though. We have lost 3 crews and will definitely loose a 4th. Dr. Werner von Braun used slave labor to build his first rocket engines. SpaceXers work 80 hr weeks to meet Elon's aggressive schedule, virtually sacrificing their lives outside of work. The basic message of Planetes is this: space is a beautiful cause that is vital to our future. That said, as humans we often let our own ego and ambition get in the way and distort this dream into something that harms others. It is far more important to be good to those you love than to build the most innovative rocket. We will go boldly and go beyond, but every ship needs a harbor. In the past few years I went from wanting to fly on Mars One to wanting to settle down and raise a family. This book taught me that space doesn't have to be the most important thing I do with my life.Planetes also has a great subplot about how technological progress isn't always evenly distributed. We talk about the triumphs of SpaceX, NASA, and Blue Origin, but we forget that these organizations only operate in the US and a select group of partner nations. What about the people who live in countries that don't have a good relationship with the space-fairing ones or are too poor to benefit from space technology? Planetes proposes that this will lead to alienation, animosity, and potentially violence.
