It is impossible not to love Mr. Barclay's commentaries, the depth of his analysis, plus the historical and grammatical information on translations and cultural issues of the time make the readings so much enlightening.Add to all that the profound and clear understanding of our faith and you have a wonderful book.
This is the updated edition of the previous Bible Studies written by William Barclay who is Scottish. William Barclay was a Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism. Therefore, the content of this Bible Study is based on Protestant Theology. This is important to know for the Roman Catholics who are looking for a Concordance that has Roman Catholic theology. When this book was revises changes were made to make it easier to read. This book contains explanations about the passages Therefore, I think of it as a Concordance rather than a Bible Study.
An excellent resource - written very clearly so that anyone from new believers to Bible scholars can read and gain valuable understanding from the text. I love that it includes the Bible passages at the top of each section as well.
Although Barclay is a biblical scholar, he writes for the general public in clear and easy to understand language. He explains the the back ground surrounding the events and the people mentioned by Paul. He explains why Paul chose to use one word over another, and what the implications of Paul's teachings were to the people of Paul' time and to our time, as well. I am studying the NT by reading all of Barclay's commentaries in order.
Barclay has a profound way of explaining the text of scripture. He gives very pertinent historical facts to help his readers picture the backdrop of the culture at the time that the writer, Paul, is giving us the foundations of a life with Christ. Sometimes I don't agree with the liberties Barclay takes in trying to rationalize the motives of Jesus, but his writings certainly enrich our ability to grasp the teachings of Christ for our own time and culture.
The clearest and most insightful commentary on the letters to the Corinthians. Written to help the lay person study in a systematic daily manner. I have used William Barclay's commentaries for decades and still find them the most useful for my study.
This is a typically useful Barclay text. You get an incisive study of the the text and context of the letter. For me it makes good reading and great reference material. I use it for personal enrichment and as reliable tool for teaching from these scripture passages. This is my second purchase from the series; I am becoming a fan of Barclay's work.
The book explains the written word for today's layperson quite well. Passages are easy to understand and the meanings are very clear. I use it whenever that Book is being studied in our Sunday School classes.
