This is one books in a series of 5 volumes so far that provide a biblical gentle commentary of Genesis through Deuteronomy. I found this series after purchasing Truthquest History, a literature rich history "spine" which is a book that gives you a framework for a certain topic (like history) and adds in many other books, activities, ideas, assignments, art, music, etc with which to create a curriculum. The Truthquest History Guide "Beginnings" uses the Nancy Ganz book on Genesis (Vol 1) throughout. Since I enjoy the writing style of the author, Michelle Miller, and she speaks of enjoying the writing style of Nancy Ganz, I thought I'd give it a try. I found that I do enjoy this series very much. Some people criticize the exuberant!! and flowery, prose-filled speech of Michelle Miller saying that they can't stomach all the !! and the poetic waxing. Nancy Ganz is a little more chill in her writing style and definitely more relaxed in her use of punctuation.I can see why Nancy Ganz inspired Michelle Miller to oft-quote her work in her "Beginnings" book. Nancy Ganz writes in a flowing, gauzy type of way that wraps around you very, very gently. Sometimes too gently if perhaps, like me, you have grown a bit fond of words that leave a purpose-filled pain in their sanctifying wake (such as the devotions in "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers). If you like that, you may find this style too soft. On the other hand, this isn't at all like Sarah Young's "Jesus Calling" writing style who seems to somehow give the impression that God is forever forming himself softly to ME in every moment of every day for eternity. Somewhere in the middle is Ganz in her style.
I purchased this book to use with my nearly 8-year-old home-schooled daughter. What a delight! I was immediately impressed with several things. First, Nancy stays true to scripture. And she cross-references many times throughout a lesson - quoting from other books of the Bible. Second, her insights are so refreshing. She just as a way of pointing out how everything God does or allows is a demonstration of His love for us. Nothing happens outside of His plan. Third, I loved the "introduction" into spiritual warfare. We are dealing with this in a very personal way right now, and many adults in our lives have no idea of how Satan works in the world. To see this approached in a way that children can understand - to begin weaving these truths into a child's learning - is so refreshing and exciting. Nancy shows the reader that while there is a physical realm in which people make choices for better or worse, there is also a spiritual realm in which Satan is working to accomplish his end. And he uses people any way they'll allow themselves to be used to do his work. Knowledge is power, and knowing how Satan uses people is a powerful beginning to resisting him.As I mentioned, my daughter is nearly 8 years old. She LOVES this book. Regularly, she asks if we can read another chapter. Sometimes our lesson plan calls for us to read one chapter and she asks if we can keep going. I agree with one of the other reviews that reading the Bible and her book can be redundant - and sometimes we skip parts of her book so we don't have too many repeats. But in this redundancy, I've found that my daughter's retention of the information - and just the depth to which she understands it - is greatly increased. She's really grasping not just the facts of the stories, but the meaning behind them.
