In Spirituality and Liberation, foremost theologian Robert McAfee Brown confronts a dilemma that has plagued Christians for centuries: the separation between the spiritual and the temporal, between prayer and social involvement. . . .that so-called liberal theologians have nothing worthwhile to say to evangelicals; that sums up, for me, the impact of this book. I first encountered the author, Robt. McAfee Brown, in a book I read with a group discussing social justice. Since that first book I've kept going back to the same well and have found some refreshment and some food for thought and action. Having now read several of Brown's books as well as his autobiography I've come to a deep respect for a man who was more interested in how he lived his life as a follower of Christ than in remaining sequestered as an ivory tower academic. In this book Brown leads us toward a liberating spirituality, that is, one that recognizes that the world is not as it is meant to be and that God has taken action climaxing in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to begin to do something about it. The salvation he offers is not an escapist spirituality to a disembodied eternity but one that calls us into a new relationship with both God and our neighbors. Spirituality and liberation as it turns out are simply two sides of the same coin of the Kingdom. And why, I want to ask, has this been so difficult to grasp?

Anybody who questions the need for both faith and works needs to read this book. Examines the idea of how in Westrn culture there is a divide between the now and the eternal and why it must be overcome. Using examples from Scripture and Chrisitan Tradition, the book puts forth a new idea of how the Christian life that is meaningful for today's world.

My book club and I will love reading this book. Thanks for sending it in a timely manner.
