James: Mercy Triumphs - Bible Book by Beth Moore provides a personal study experience five days a week plus viewer guides for the 8 video sessions of this in-depth women's Bible study. James, Jesus’ own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple. Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways, James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, reversal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer. 8 video sessions with 7 weeks of print study.Beth introduces a 5-tiered study approach with this study.Level 1: Watch the video sessions only.Level 2: Watch the video sessions and do the homework each week.Level 3: Watch the video sessions, do the homework each week, and, as you study, write out the entire Book of James.Level 4: Watch the video sessions, do the homework each week, write out the Book of James, and complete the “What could I do to go deeper?” section each week. This section is written in collaboration with Beth’s daughter Melissa.Level 5: Watch the video sessions, do the homework each week, write out the Book of James, complete the “What could I do to go deeper?” section each week, and memorize the entire Book of James.

I love Beth Moore and have completed a few of her past studies: Esther, Breaking Free, David, Daniel. There are several different participation levels for this study to choose from: 1. Just watch DVD, 2. Watch DVD and do workbook, 3. In addition to the previous you can also handwrite the whole book of James, 4. Do all the previous plus read all of Melissa's (Beth's daughter) commentaries 5. Do all of the previous plus memorize the entire book of James.I didn't love this study. I didn't find that any of Melissa's writings added value to the overall study - but just took longer to complete the workbook without added benefit. Additionally, numerous times Beth had us flipping through the Bible to find other obscure references where the same word was used....again, not adding value to the overall study and making the lessons take longer to complete. While I certainly do find value in searching the Bible for other similar ways that a particular word might have been used, there were several times where it seemed like she would reference other places with a similar word...without additional insight to be gained. For example, in the workbook on p 115, she discusses James 3:9 - 12 where James is baffled that the same mouth can be used to curse men and bless God and the analogy that a spring does not send forth both salt water and fresh water. Most of p. 116 is spent making a comparison to Exodus 15:22-25 when Moses was in the wilderness and water was scarce. They came upon bitter waters of Marah but God showed Moses that if he cast a tree into the waters they would be made sweet. Not completely relevant to James' issue of a mouth that has both bitter and sweet things come from it...even though it is the same root word.Another example is on p.
