My 8-year old finished this in 5 days. He said it deserved 5 stars. The ending left you hanging a bit. I guess that leaves the option of a sequel open. He didn't notice the typos/edit errors, I noticed one confusing sentence in the first 6 pages or so that I read to him to prove the reading was not too challenging for him. I don't need literary perfection, just something that holds his interest and challenges him a little; it's getting harder to find books he'll really dig into when they don't have pictures or comics anymore, but this one worked. He said none of it scared him, I guess because he has so much experience with the game itself. Another one of the Minecraft novels also caught my eye, but in checking out the writing, the main character was criticizing his parents a lot - trying to stay away from that theme which is so prevalent in some of the kids books these days. Keeping kids positive about school, teachers, parents and family members is hard enough without the influence of books.

As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, this is a book for OLDER kids. My 11 year old son said it was AWESOME. He said the main character was really cool and there were tons of lines that cracked him up. I hope the author comes out with some more Minecraft novels soon.If you're looking for other Minecraft novels to pick up, my son also loved ENCOUNTERS WITH THE HEROBRINE 3-IN-1: Minecraft Novel Collection

My eleven year old snatched this out of my hands before it was out of the packaging and had his nose buried in it all evening. I can't actually attest to the quality of the writing or the story. But what I can say is that it was worth every penny since it got the boy off of the computer and reading. I'm off to order the other Minecraft novel others have mentioned now.

This book is great for minecraft lovers. I don't know how you would react, but I found a respect for villagers. I used to be a greifer, now I build houses for them. On general, this is a fun book.

This book has a fairly intense start through the first two chapters. The main character has several stereotypical gamer traits. He engages in griefing, teasing, sabatoging, and other game play forms of bullying. There are several uses of the word “damn” and a few noticeable grammar errors. This definitely has a first print run and a bit of a feeler to see if there is a market for more. It appears that the author intends this book to be part of a series. He has an invitation for readers to send him images of Minecraft scenes that the correlate to various scenes in the book. I think that is a cool idea. There is also a request for feedback from the readers. This book should be fine for grade 7 and perhaps a strong grade 6 student?

For avid Minecraft players in their teen and/or tween years, this ingenious Minecraft adventure novel by Mark Cheverton is a dream come true. Having read it with my 11-year old son, I can attest to the fact that it was an engaging and fun read, and it also conveyed a positive underlying message.I admire the author's inventiveness for using Minecraft as a setting for an adventure novel--real kudos there. I also think the overall plot and the characters were interesting, and that the story was generally well told. What disappointed me was the quality of the writing in a number of places. There were numerous instances of incomplete sentences, misspellings, words used incorrectly, and grammatical mistakes. As a parent, those things bothered me A LOT. I spend a lot of time and energy trying to teach my son good writing habits, and it doesn't help to reinforce those habits when he sees those kinds of egregious mistakes in a book he is reading. The only other criticism I have of the story is something that my son, an avid Minecraft player, pointed out--namely, there were several instances of the main character doing things in the game that a serious player might consider pretty 'dumb' (in terms of Minecraft expertise), and there were also some inconsistencies with the way in which the game actually works. But those things were certainly forgivable and not a major hindrance to our enjoyment of the story. We look forward to the next installment in the series and congratulate Mr. Cheverton on a brilliant idea and on a story well told.

I write very few reviews, but when an author really knocks one out of the park, I like to give kudos where they are due! My 13 year old son, he of Minecraft / Black Ops / Terraria worlds, would not put this book down. He is eagerly awaiting the two sequels, and not only read the book cover to cover, but then went back and RE-READ passages! I've never seen him do that with any book, and he does read a pretty good amount. Nice job, Mark!!

PARENTS BE WARNED!!!! I thought this was a "Learn to Read" style chapter book. It's NOT! The content is extremely disturbing in a world where kids are opening fire on schools and such. Let me share a few content items to give you an idea of what you are getting before you buy this book: Phrases like 'He killed his prey with a chuckle, indiscrimantly firing into a group of players, not caring whom he hit" and "he killed pigs just for fun.." "a moaning that sounded like hatred for all living things" and more and more of the same kind of stuff. It's about a boy who is 12 years old, not very big but is powerful in the game so he gets back at the world by killing everyone in the game that he can. I believe later that changes but the content is so disturbing regardless of the outcome. It's not a novel that is really part of the true electronic game, but written as someone who plays the game and the game becomes real to them. I wanted to return the book to . To their credit they said, "Keep it and we'll refund you anyway." Of all the items I've ever ordered online, this is the only one that I don't want even if it's free. I refuse to let any other child read it on my account so I won't donate it. Looks like the landfill is going to be one book richer.
