"Mr. Young Goes to Boston" is the incredible story of one of the most loved and successful Christian Scientists, in his quest to help the church he cherished. A book of great force and power, destined to open the eyes of the many who yearn to see the return of the wonderful healings performed in Christian Science up through the 1940's. Alan Young, known and beloved the world over for his "Mr. Ed" television series and his inspired talks as a Christian Science lecturer, recalls with humor and pathos his determined but fruitless crusade to forward the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science by modern means. It is a riveting, tragic story, told with great love.

I've just finished reading this book, which I bought used. I'm delighted to notice that it is now newly back in print! It deserves to remain in print as an important footnote to church history, documenting how institutions go astray, despite a founder's strenuous efforts to keep a teaching pure.Few students of Christian Science are aware of the bizarre management methods that pervade church culture. But, more than methods, we are invited to consider the intense disobedience by church management which has persisted for over a hundred years. Alan Young saw it all from near the top, and had the courage and honesty to detail his observations in this tiny volume. When members fail to hold management accountable, institutions jump the rails. History will continue to deliver failure until the course is corrected through obedience. Until we face our duty, dysfunctional practices will continue. This history is not pretty, but the telling is honest and the tone is gentle. It deserves honest examination by thinking members who have courage to question "authority" and hold it accountable to the highest standard. Young has sharpened the questions for us. But we need to press for answers. Until we do, a little child shall lead them, asking why 'The Emperor Has No Clothes.'

from the Christian Science Church details his lengthy career within the Church hierarchy and his eventual disillusionment with it. As a lapsed Scientist myself, I was particularly interested to know just what internecine machinations precipitated the slow downfall of one of the world's great religious institutions. The author, along with me and many others, continues to believe in the efficacy of the message while feeling a deep sadness at the lack of coherent leadership at the helm.

I loved it. Alan Young is funny, and the sweetest most real person who is indeed a great communicator. It was sad to hear about some of his adventures, but all big organizations have major problems that come with sheer size, and it was sad that these could not be worked out at the time.

As a former member of the Christian Science church (although I still practice the work) - Mr. Young's account of his experience with officials at the church do not surprise me. I have been aware from first-hand accounts as well as, others, what has been going on in Boston. But I was surprised to hear that it was happening in the 60's & 70's!!When I read this book it reminded me of what all human organizations go through - just as in our government, other religious organizations etc.A person or persons, have an idea or 'vision', they formulate it and others 'come on board' - only to find that most of the 'others' do not quite understand and 'agree' with the 'original' vision - worse still, once an organization is created, church, government etc. the ones who created it become the 'subjects' or 'poor souls' who need the 'guidance' and 'stern hand' of those who have been 'elected' or, 'selected' to do the bidding and conduct the affairs of all, but now they have become the 'masters'!Same sad story for mankind.Mr. Young gives some good advice to all concerned - but you should read the book - it is an 'easy read' and even those not involved in Christian Science proper will have much to learn.Fine book - Highly recommended!!!
