Prior to the release of Science and Health in 1875, Mrs. Mary Baker Glover, had written two class drill handbooks of Christian Science, one in 1870 and one in 1874 both entitled the “SCIENCE OF MAN.”Despite her hope to publish the Science of Man, she saw that these first statements of Science and Health must not be in the public thought and so she had each of her students in 1870 to sign a $3,000 note to her—no one but she and the student would ever see it. After Science and Health was made public at the end of Oct. 1875, Mrs. Eddy then copyrighted in 1876 the 1874 edition of SCIENCE OF MAN; thus “Science of Man - 1876” came into being.When a student attempted to plagiarize Science and Health, Mary Baker Glover, now Mary Baker Eddy (having married Asa Eddy in 1877) went to the Federal District Court to fully establish her authorship. When she got the Court’s full protection of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy saw that since the language of her 1870 original work SCIENCE OF MAN, because of its own unique language, had no copyright protection under the law in effect at that time, even though entered according to the Act of Congress in 1870. Immediately, she submitted the original 1870 SCIENCE OF MAN for copyright in 1883 under the name of Mrs. Mary B. G.
