Bought this for a ten-year-old who doesn't yet have to deal with this (but it's probably on it's way)...she loved it, read it cover to cover and shared it with her friends.I'm not an American Girl fan: I think their products are over-priced and elitist, but their books offer an astoundingly grounded viewpoint that reinforces the "it's okay to be you, even if everyone is different" mantra that I can only respect and support. The book is not too thick, has pictures, and bright colours. There is a lot of empathy encouraged.I bought this in conjunction with the American Girl's "Smart Girl's Guide to Friendship Troubles".
All of the Smart Girl's Guides are tween/young teen approved. Sometimes my young one doesn't know what to ask or has no idea about a concept until she reads it - then it all fits for her in many ways. Sometimes she reads, and we discuss further. These books are done in an easy reading, quick to scan, non-formal education way that appeals to my girl.
My granddaughter tells me this is just so-so. Nothing she didn't know before. She's just starting middle school and enjoyed the offering from American Girl that addresses that subject better than this book which didn't teach her anything new. This might be better for a younger girl, say 4th grade.
I am a dad and bought this for my daughter. It is a very helpful book for girls. I'm a staunch Christian and having read most of the book, I didn't read anything that is out of alignment with Christian virtues.
This is a great book for young girls. My 9 year old daughter loved it and read it in a couple days. It is a great way to open discussion with kids about drama/rumors/bullying, etc.
Great Book! My 11 year old Daughter loves this book. Will order more of this series.
Love it so far! My 10 year old daughter's teacher saw me with it in hand in her class and asked what it was. She flipped through it and said, "Oh, man, I could have really used this years ago!". So she's borrowing it right now : - )
