Ok, I like the guy, and I'm Baptist. Reading this book seemed to give me more reasons to like him.As Pope, he is the face of the Roman Catholic Church, but the former Father Jorge Mario Bergoglio prefers to call himself a Bishop. I knew he hadn't moved into the lavish Papal apartments, but didn't understand why until I read this book. And boy, does he have a sense of humor! A certain toast proves it.He really is a man of the people and for the people. There's a certain day (don't expect me to know all these names-I told you I'm Baptist) when the Pope washes the feet of 12 people. I've read my Bible, though; I know he's doing it because Christ washed the feet of His disciples. When Pope Francis went to the youth prison where this usually takes place, he did things a bit differently. His twelve people included two Muslims and two young women. No one had EVER done that before. But you don't have to read much to find out that this Pope was an activist in his past. He was born and grew up in Argentina, a place with a checkered past of its own. Mention Argentina and most Americans think 'Evita' or 'the Falklands'. We don't know about quadruple digit inflation, or kidnappings, government lies or the fiasco called 'The Dirty Wars'. This one man directed others to try and bring a sense of normality to Argentina! He had church authorities collect data to show that the government was providing incorrect inflation stats and employment stats. He spoke out against any government policy that harmed the poor even more. The government retaliated where it hurt, by signing into law two things that were in direct violation of church policy-abortion and same sex marriage. The future Pope was not silent. You can read what he said, every word, in the book.
