Did My First Mother Love Me?: A Story For An Adopted Child
Ebooks Online

When young Morgan asks, "Did my first mother love me?" her adoptive mother reads her a letter written by Morgan’s birth mother. This birth mother’s love, concern, and caring for her child come through loud and clear as she explains the kind of life she wants for her child. Sadly, she explains, she cannot provide that life for her child, so she has given her a different set of parents. “My dearest child, to your parents I have given the precious gift of you,” she writes. A reassuring story, this book can be adapted to the reader’s family situation.

This book addresses the needs of adopted children who feel the pain of having lost their birthparents. They may "miss" them--which is really an expression of loss.Written by an actual birthmother who gave up her child, the book tells adopted children that their birthparents loved them but could not care for them. The book speaks of the sacrifice and love involved in placing a child in another home, in terms that even small children "get."For parents, the book also includes an article by Jeanne Warren Lindsay, "Talking with your Child about Adoption." It explains key points that parents should make when talking with their adopted children--they were born like everyone else, being adopted is normal and natural and it's forever. And of course, their birthparents did not "abandon" them, but loved them in the best way they could. Alyssa A. Lappen

There aren't enough books out there with this perspective. This book is a lot better than nothing or just leaving it at "your birth-mother couldn't care for a baby, so we adopted you." That said, the illustrations are not interesting for children, too many views of a child's soulful eyes. That may be appealing to adults but it is unlikely to capture a child's attention. My three-year-old isn't close to interested yet. Even so, when she starts asking specific questions this may well be helpful. The text is as good as can be, given that it has to be general, to be relevant to lots of different cases of adoption. The illustrations leave much to be wished for, however.

this book is short and to the point. very touching, without being sappy. i wish there were a boy's version as well, but we can ad-lib with what is here.

This is a very nice idea for a book. I would like to buy something to help my daughter understand that her birth mother made her choice out of love. But the term "first mother" seems confusing. I wish the author had titled it "Did My Birth Mother Love Me?" instead.

I am a birthmother whom order this book for my daughter whom I placed in a open adoption. This book helped me so much plus the author invites you change words to make it more personal for you or the adopted child. Good for birthmothers adopt children.
