This is 32-page workbook is a good choice for pre-schoolers who are familiar with the letters of the alphabet and are learning to distinguish the sounds different letters make. The last two pages have written letters that kids must circle (ie, does butterfly begin with B or V?) but the rest of the book focuses on images. No writing skills are necessary, however kids must have a relatively high vocabulary so they can identify each object. This is the forth or fifth "Get Ready!" workbook my daughter has completed. She has enjoyed all of them. Each page is filled with large, whimsical illustrations of animals and objects. For the most part, the book keeps to the basic sounds (short a, hard c, etc.) The one exception I noticed (and my daughter had a bit of difficulty with) was the letter I. Some of the pages feature images that include a particular letter in the middle or the end of a word, so that kids must not only be able to identify the right sound, but also the right place for that sound to occur. It is a simple, appropriate challenge. Every once in a while, my daughter would encounter an object she couldn't identify, or one that she uses another word for (eg, "airplane" versus "jet"). That's just another part of the learning experience.

I purchased this book at our local bookstore. There are only 32 pages, and the exercises are so simple, my 4yr old flew through this in about 15 minutes. It might have taken less time, but he had trouble with a couple of consonants, and I wanted to make sure he grasped the sounds. He did well with the vowels, although this book does not distinguish between short and long vowels. The letters are not in alphabetical order, but I think that made it more interesting. After every few letters, there are pages with rows of pictures; in each row, the child is asked to match the pictures that begin with the same sound. That was his favorite activity. If your child breezes through this, or you would like something with consonant blends, check out Blends and Phonics Review (Phonics Deluxe). My son has completed several workbooks from School Zone, and they have been pretty good overall; however, I suggest skipping the smaller workbooks if you purchase the scholar or deluxe editions, otherwise you risk seeing the same exercises from one book to the next.

I ordered a few of these books. I am just repeating the review under all of them because they are all great. I used all of these books to teach my daughter at home instead of paying for preschool. I also used other hands on things to teach. These books helped a lot. She is now in 1st grade and a straight A student. When she entered kindergarten they gave a test to see if she was ready....she had surpassed their testing. These books along with other one on one teaching will really help you either homeschool your child or help your child if they need help in a particular subject. They are totally worth every penny paid for them.

Young children need quality books and quality time to learn at home what the schools do not have the time to teach. Take charge and teach your children early. My daughter began using this book when she turned 2. Don't underestimate your children. Within two months of using this book, she stopped me on the street and yelled "Mom! that sign says STOP!" Sure enough, she was reading the stop sign and kept learning from then on. Was reading Harry Potter by 6. This book is a true gift. Only with they had many many more version of it to increase repetition factor. Buy this for every young child you know!!!!

My daughter is very interested in reading, and books like "Beginning Sounds" really helped her draw more interest in learning to read. Everywhere we go she is sounding out words and beginning to read some of them on her own!

I got this for my son to use on long trips and at home when bored. The books are thin, but it says they have only a few pages in the description so no surprise. Also bought them since they are cheap, the only complain would be that I got this with the 4-for-3 promotion and I never got my $1.40 deducted, but it's only 1.40 so that's no big deal. I like that the books are full color. Fast delivery, arrived in good condition(these came in a box with other books).

nice book for kids learning early sounds. This was a nice easy book for preschool homeschoolers. I am using it to give my 2 almost 3 year old a head start and she is really enjoying learning in a fun way. I would definitely buy again!

My 4-year-old loves these, we purchased several, all of them were great. Definitely a bargain for a dollar or two. However, I would not pay more than $2 for each one of these. They aren't worth more than that.
