I grew up with Scholastic. I love Scholastic. However, I do not love this workbook. Upon quick flip-through, it looks wonderful! But, beyond the earliest pages, very little of it is actually age-appropriate, and what is is so repetitive and boring that my 5-year-old cries when she sees certain pages. I'm going out on a thin limb here in guessing that other reviewers haven't used this book long. We are almost finished with it. My daughter started out loving it too, and, early on, I could have written a five-star review. Now that we've gone through all but the last 30 or so pages, my view is quite different.Early on, the counting and cutting and pasting seems fun, but you know what's not fun? Yet another page of drawing 17 clams and cutting out 17 turtles to paste on a rock, then 18 this and that. It's like the 12 Days of Christmas on steroids. It's busywork. A lot of it is just boring busywork. This, and counting how many dots are on ladybugs, is he extent of the math in this book. To be honest, it shouldn't be any more. When we were in kindergarten, we glued our age number in dots to ladybugs to take home as an arts and crafts project that taught us number. We just didn't have to cut out 20 carrots or whatever it is, and draw 20 of whatever else. I ended up tossing many of the math pages out and instead counted everyday objects with my daughter. "Charlotte, I accidentally dropped the M&Ms! How many did I drop?" She can now count high enough that the sky's the limit.The shapes were fine. Pretty basic. They did bore my daughter since she already identifies dodecahedrons, and calls diamonds parallelograms, but, for the typical kid, the shapes are basic, and so are the patterns.
