My son has a mild language disorder and needs a very structured approach to stretching and exercising his receptive and expressive language. The public school does not provide enough structure or appropriate ways to practice. Homework is all over the place and the writing instruction weak. So we've purchased several of the books from the series, Writing Skills, Reading Comprehension, and Problem Solving. The books are structured, interesting and attractively illustrated. My son enjoys the stories, the lessons are clear and easy to understand. He has no problem working through most of the exercises on his own....they are wonderful and he is learning!! The answer keys are in the back and I can quickly cross check his work.I was so impressed I went out and bought their complete curriculum which is an exceptional bargain as it covers reading, spelling, math, language arts and writing skills. There is also a section of practice tests. These are ideal workbooks to supplement kids public school education.
I started homeschooling my 1st and 2nd graders this year and I wasn't happy with my "English" curriculum so bought the Language Arts, Writing Skills and Reading Skills for both grades. Not only do I love them but the kids really do enjoy them...really! They actually cheer when I tell them it's time to pull out the books! My 1st grader has gone from what I would call a sub-standard reading level to doing so well that he finished his 1st grade book and wanted to start the 2nd grade book! The lessons are short, have great pictures and easy directions. The stories all have memory skills, some have life lessons, others are just silly. The lesson usually entails a story, then some questions, word/definition match game, and a couple other activities. I am very happy with this series and will be using it for years to come. The only suggestion I would have to the company would be to allow more writing space. Kids at this age write large letters and there is never enough room to fit it all.
These books make a great and fun addition to our homeschool curriculum. The stories are educational and interesting - covering a variety of topics from movie stunts to making rose beads. My daughter likes the books so much she asks to do them. While reading Skills 1 was simple stories with general questions about understanding - this book involves more detailed tasks like sequencing and cause and effect and such. The reading offers just enough of a challenge. For the price, I think we'll always keep these on hand. We use Reading Skills, Writing Skills, and Language Arts. If you're a homeschooler, pick one up. If you aren't, it might be a great summer practice book to keep kids reading.
my daughter is 7 years old and loves reading for pleasure. But I want her to practice reading in a more mindful way. This book has several units and each contains a few lessons, so kids can learn to pay attention to sequence, context, etc. She enjoy reading the short paragraghes and doing the quizs afterwards. And she usually got one or two answers wrong here and there, but now she could get all right answers since she understood using the context to find relevant answers. She also enoy the content presented through the reading materials and learned quite a few facts she never knew before.
This workbook was recommended by a friend. My son enjoyed doing it without being frustrated as what he tends to be. He finished the one for grade one quickly, then moved to the second grade book smoothly and this one helped him much more. My recommendation is to start easy, maybe one grade lower to let the kid feel the success.
I love this workbook. My daughter reads a paragraph then answers questions pertaining to what has been read. I always assumed that she was a good reader based on reading fluency. However upon using this workbook I have discovered that her comprehension is lacking. This has been a valuable resource for my daughter.
This book is really good. The content is rich and the questions are challenge enough to my 2nd grader but not too difficult. And here is what my 2nd grader said, "I loved the book because: 1. the stories were all very interesting; 2, the book has very cool pictures."
I haven't found anything out there like this. This book is full of age appropriate, interesting stories. It works on my child's comprehension and gives her useful knowledge. I just love it, I can't recommend it enough. My kid wants to do more each time she works from this book.
