it's a good book
In her book, Preaching the Presence of God, Eunjoo Kim strategically and methodically dissects the way in which preaching is constructed, understood, and interpreted from an Asian American perspective. Kim examines the critical thinking that is implemented from an Asian American point of view both from a listener and a preacher perspective. I find Kim's book to be clear and insightful in its depiction of the Christian Church, as influenced by Western rhetoric and by the Enlightenment and Reformation. Also, this book is accurate and fairly comprehensive in its assessment of Asian American Christianity's cultural sensitivity to indigenous religions from the East, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and shamanism. Kim goes into further detail about how each of these Eastern religions have influenced and impacted the way in Asian American churches function and experience God, and subsequently argues how preachers of today ought to communicate to an Asian American context.The central thesis of Kim's book is to approach preaching in a new way- one that is both dialogical and dialectical, which means that there is an intentional emphasis placed upon interdependency. According to Kim, this type of preaching model allows for an awareness to and a respectful interaction with differences and similarities between the preacher and the congregation.
