The dialogue in Intense is brief, but the words can pack such an emotional wallop. In just that sentence, we can get a glimpse into the kind of miserable life Jiwoon goes through as the Boss' slave. Because that's what Jiwoon is, a slave that quietly follows and mindlessly obeys whatever that piece of s**t Boss demands. As Soohan and Jiwoon's relationship deepens and becomes physical, we find out that the rumors are true. The young, strange, beautiful boy is regularly sexually abused by the Boss. He has been so emotionally and physically stomped on, he has a hard time even understanding that what the Boss does to him isn't normal, and with tenderness, Soohan manages to open him up to an actual loving relationship. But not everything is going well, the madam has caught up to their secret trysts, and worse, the Boss is out of jail and calls Jiwoon back. What will happen to these sad, beautiful boys and their seemingly doomed love? I want to find out, but at the same time, I'm afraid to find out. What a wonderful piece of storytelling.
The plot and character development might take awhile to get going, but the two main characters are endearing enough to get you through it all. I was honestly surprised this series didn't go as dark as it seemed like it might. Happy it didn't, though, since it wasn't necessary. The boys' pasts appear dark enough as it is. The art is beautiful, in some parts breath taking. The love scenes were, in a word, INTENSE.
A satisfying end that addresses real concerns in any relationship, yet stays in the fantastic world presented by the author.
Fabulous series - buy all books at once, you won't regret it. I hope to find more written by Kyungha Yi.
