The only thing that differentiates this from other collections of practice standardized tests is that it explains the difference between the reading comprehension parts of the tests. One being for knowledge of subject matter, the other for simply the content of the paragraphs.
My colleague and I have been using the Barron's prep book for several years. Its use with our eighth-grade students contributes greatly to their confidence when they take the admissions test for the private Catholic high school of their choice. The variety of exercises in language arts and math are a good review of material the students have already covered in their classes.
Bought this for the HSPT. Daughter went through the two practice tests. She said when it came time to take the actual HSPT, the questions were easier than what was in this practice guide (which is a good thing). She definitely felt more confident taking the HSPT after practicing with this book.
I got this book for my 8th grade daughter who will be taking the hspt in a couple of months. She began doing a few practice questions to get a feel. I could tell she was getting frustrated, she explained that she was going crazy because she couldn't get the same answer as the book no matter how she tried. After doing the problem myself and asking a math teacher we found out that she was right and the book had the wrong answer. This happened three times in one section. The extra time and frustration involved in this was very unfortunate. Next she moved on to the reading comprehension passage practice. On question 1 it talks about an explorer going from Beijing to Vienna, Italy. This also frustrated my daughter and that was the point we gave up on this book. If they don't know that Vienna is in Austria NOT Italy then I don't know what to say. It's possible that it was just a typo and they actually meant Venice, or Verona, who knows? But if we can't trust even little information, how can we trust that there aren't other mistakes that we wouldn't notice? it's much too sloppy a book for a so called reputable test prep company. I'm returning this as a defective product. Which, with its missing and wrong pieces it absolutely is. Buyer beware!
Our school vice principal recommended this book for preparing for the HPST. This is a great prep book. The questions are harder than the ones they used in $800 prep course. My son said the actual HSPT was ridiculously easy compared to the test questions in this book. This book prepared him more than he needed. Buy the book- don't waste your $$ on the over priced review course.
The language arts section does a nice job teaching techniques on how to answer reading comprehension questions. The math review has many significant typos, that thus called into question all answers. There are a sufficient number of practice problems and practice tests.
Great book! I decided to buy this book after my girlfriend highly recommended it; she has 2 high school boys who used it. I Bought this for my 8th grader who will shortly be taking the test for high school entrance. He has been able to easily follow through with this book. And I think it's really helped him! I'm confident he will succeed on the test because of this study guide.
Quite appropriate for average and above average students but it is difficult for my students who have missed rigorous study prior to studying at our school.I will probably start this process with 6th grade transfer students to assess the gaps and plan remedial work.
