I am always disappointed when I see the word "cult" used to subjectively describe the beliefs of any group that does not have the particular dogmas of a certain sect. The biblical word is "heresy", not cult. The word "cult" is used to to stigmatize religious sects in an attempt to make them look dangerous, so that one looks at the sect, in this case the Jehovah's Witnesses, as one would look at, say, the People's Church tragedy where followers of Jim Jones were forced to drink cyanide-laced kool-aid after he was shown to have been guilty of crimes. That is a cult. Differences of opinion on the nature of God, the nature of Christ, the way of salvation, the judgement, etc. are biblically called heresies. The use of the word "cult" is really just an attempt to make an "end run" around the US Constitution, which allows freedom of religion and freedom from religion. Thus, my criticism of this book does not even have to do with the fact that criticizes the beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses. I have relatives who are JWs. I believe some of the beliefs are wrong. However, I would NEVER use the word "cult" to describe them. What about the segment among Baptists that believes in optional Lordship - that all one needs to do is accept Jesus Christ as Saviour without repentance of sin by the influence of the Holy Spirit to be eternally secure - which means there is no change in the life of the person (not born again or born from above). This subset of Baptist does not teach the same gospel as Jesus Christ or Paul in the New Testament, and other Baptists would say these Baptists teach heresy. According to the author of this book, the one set of Baptists may call the other a "cult", and vice versa, yet neither subset of Baptists are asking their members to drink poisoned kool-aid.
