Having known the author since 1982, I was eager to read his memoir. I was not disappointed. This is truly an encouraging book about a nation still struggling with civil war. As I read eagerly through each chapter, it brought back many memories of past conversations. Ahmed, along with co-author David Shenk, have written a book that is a must read for anyone interested in the modern history of Somalia. Ahmed's wealth of knowledge of Somali culture, Islam and Christianity are presented in a very readable and insightful way. As tomorrow will be four weeks since his passing to his eternal reward, I am deeply thankful that Ahmed's witness as a disciple of Jesus Christ [and someone who took peacemaking seriously] is recorded as an inspiration to many.
The story is narrated in the last year or so of his life, looking back over his life journey of faith as well as his endeavours to help Somalia attain peace. He could have made a life for himself in the US but chose to go back to help the people of Somalia. An extraordinary story of the man and his family and those who helped him. It also helps one understand the Somali Muslim mindset, and Ahmed talks about how his pursuit of God meant not so much rejecting his Islamic beliefs, but actually pursuing closer to God.
Can a Muslim believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sin in a monolithic, Muslim society like in Somalia and survive. What is the price for being a peacemaker among deadly enemies in your own country? The price for Ahmed Haile was the loss of a leg when a grenade interrupted his conversation in the middle of serious negotiations. How does one turn an enemy into a friend? In Ahmed's case, one invites them for tea, even at the moment when they are coming to kill you. This personal story is a non stop thriller along with a great deal of serious business.
This book does a great job giving some basic background and understanding of Somalia, mission and peace work there and a lives transformed by Jesus in that context. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
My husband was delighted.
