I did not realize that this book is designed to be used with the rest of the Spectrum curriculum. We are working around it but it assumesThat your child has been inteoduced to certain math or science words by using the Spectrum curriculum for those subjects making new "spelling" words appear out of nowhere. A bit confusing for the child.
I purchased this book to add spelling to our homeschool curriculum. I bought the 2nd grade level for my 1st grader - I would definitely recommend going 1 level up from grade level if you have a phonetic speller or experienced reader. I like how each lesson in this book has 4 practice pages with varied activities, allowing Monday through Thursday work, leaving Friday for a Spelling Test. After 5 lessons, there is a cumulative review for previous lessons. The book does a great job teaching grammar skills, the meanings of words, beginning writing, synonyms and antonyms, word patterns, rhyming, and more. I am very happy with my purchase and I will continue using this in my Homeschool curriculum next year as well. :)
Great Book! My soon to be 2nd grader is flying through it. We have been doing mini spelling tests at the end of each unit. Its not too difficult but challenging enough that she some times comes up for questioning. Directions are easy to read!
My son enjoys this book. I think it's pretty good. The part I don't like is every 4 pages you have to come up with some creative ad or rhyming sentence. It makes it hard for my son to do the work independently, which he wants to do.
Overall the curriculum is ok. Some of the questions are not very clear even got an adult. Won't buy again.
I've used Spectrum for all 4 of my homeschooling kids and love it! It is straight-forward.
This book has helped my daughter improve on her spelling as well as her reading.
