I used this same series last year for home-schooling my now 4th grade son. It works great for him since he is one who gets easily frustrated and overwhelmed when he sees large chunks of work for the day. This book offers small pieces that expose him to a nice variety of writing. Each week starts with a specific grammar lesson, then works into learning a specific type/style of writing, easing into the chosen outline style (such as Ven diagrams and such) all gearing up for ending with students writing their own story/article/letter or whatever the case may be, using the outline created the day before. It's just enough to emphasize the various styles without bogging them down with ideas they may never use in life. It also includes short and simple teacher's notes that precede each week's lessons, making it so easy to find and use (no more than a minute to read). I recommend this book as a great resource both for the home-schooled student AND the teacher!

I've been told that to really get a person into writing - they have to write, write, write. That was not working for my 4th grade son. He would try, but would get frustrated and his writing showed that. I wasn't sure what to do, but decided to try this workbook style writing. The lessons are quick and really do teach techniques that are easy for my son to learn. I see him using them, and his writing improving. Although we aren't really writing more than a couple of paragraphs yet, I am confident that he is getting closer to being successful at that too. Best of all, he is enjoying writing, and we are making a lot of progress!

I am a homeschool mom to 2 boys, 2 girls. My 4th grade boy is a very reluctant writer and we have struggled all year. Our curriculum was too open-ended and too broad. He was becoming very frustrated every time we have to write something and our sessions usually ended in tears (for us both!). This has been WONDERFUL! It breaks up writing into small mini-lessons each day of about 10-15 minutes. On Friday, they use what they've learned that week to write a small piece. He doesn't even know he's writing, and he's enjoying it. His writing quality has improved in the short time we've used this book. I imagine it will be fabulous by summer break. I also purchased the 1st grade book for my other son, who is also doing very well with it and they both look forward to it each day. My only complaint is that I didn't start this at the beginning of the year!

My homeschooled fourth grade son was really struggling with writing. This book provides baby steps in the writing process. It gets him thinking critically about writing everyday, and is helping him become more precise with his writing. Best $25 I've spent on curriculum in a long time!

This has helped my students with their editing skills tremendously! I actually have them make the appropriate editing marks and then we review as a whole class before they write the sentences. It gives them a chance for more learning and I only grade the written sentences. It has motivated them in editing which has been challenging until this point.

The workbook is great home teaching tool and good practice for the my son. He appreciate the extra work and did good at school.

The book features the 6-traits of writing. The concepts are spread out over the course of a week and are built upon each other. This is an excellent strategy for reinforcing concepts and differentiating instruction.

I teach special education students and these books help me tremendously when attempting accommodations.
