I used this book as well as the author's "Exploring Writing" (which is for grades 4-6) to focus on writing with my seventh grader. Each of the books is primarily a series of exercises focusing on the steps in the writing process. There are instructions before each section, but I used primarily the worksheets. An exercise on "Finding and Developing Ideas for Writing," for example, will have a topic, e.g., "The Game," and questions to help the student brainstorm details for a composition on the subject. There are probably 50 of these, and they are organized into topics. The next step, "Writing the Draft," has exercises on grammar, using comparison and contrast, etc., and of course the students would also write drafts using the worksheets from Part I. The "Revision" and "Proofreading" sections have actual compositions for the student to revise or proofread, so the student gets practice revising and proofing someone's work besides her own (hugely helpful). It is a tremendous resource for writing prompts, and the worksheets with questions are a wonderful help to elicit details for the composition.I purchased these from a local bookstore on a whim, out of desperation for something to use for my daughter who is (was!) a horrible writer. After a school year using a variety of resources and many, many of the exercises from these two books, she is vastly improved. Considering what I have spent on other writing programs, hammering on the steps in the writing process using the exercises in this series has been by far the best time and money I have spent. No matter how busy I am on other subjects, I can pull a worksheet or two out of one of these books and get her started on a helpful writing exercise. She has made tremendous strides this year, and this has been a very valuable tool in our arsenal.

Practice Makes Perfect was always my favorite for Spanish Workbooks. I was pleasantly surprised to see English Workbooks from them as well. They are great. They cover the material I need in a comprehensive, clear manner. I feel like I can effectively use this througout the year as a companion to my writing workshop lessons.

I gave this book as a gift to a recent college graduate who will be teaching elementary students. I remember that I always 'wished' I'd had 'outside' reference books for projects, so this was one of four I thought she may be able to use from time-to-time in her new vocation.

The book starts with an emphasis on who, where, what and why questions which I find to be key for competent writing. It then has sections on crafting drafts and proofreading. Practice does make perfect so make sure to write some essays based on the exercises ;)

It's a nice workbook with many questions. However, it will be too easy for 10 to 14 years old. It's for third graders not for six graders.

this is a helpful review for anyone. I also like to use this with my 6th grader nephew for this writing assignments.
