Great resource for students just learning to formulate thoughts in an orderly manner, but still use their creativity. I do all the excercises (1-4 for the week) on the same day and then the rest of the week give them different topics to write following the skills learned that week.(which is supposed to done on day 5) If you do all the excercises in one day, it should only take about 15-20 minutes. You can also break it down to last the whole week, but since I homeschool and have only two students, the one day method works for us. I can then use it when they write a history summary, literature, or any other topic I chose. The book covers a variety of topics and skills such as using adjectives, writing a topic sentence the five W's (but sadly no H) and more. There is ample space to write in the book as well.
I LOVE this book. It is great for helping you cover the basics for good writing and preparing students for accountability testing. It covers everything from idea selection to adding details, organization, etc. It also covers the conventions such as capitalization, contractions, punctuations in a concise format with an extended writing activity on Fridays and development for the writing in the preceding 4 days. I would highly recommend this for individuals who are not sure where to start in an expository writing instruction. A math teacher could teach writing with this book>. Worth the look!
This is an excellent book to support the writing program. It gives daily ideas and blackline masters to use. It has helped my students obtain a stronger understanding of the traits and they are better able to use the skills in their writing.
This book is an interactive book between parents( the teacher) and the student. I like that you get to sit and have a discussion and help your child to learn the 6 traits of writing. I also like that it provides a page a day of activities. My daughter usually finishes a page a day, and we use this book along with paragraph writing by Evan Moor, and we use another common core narrative writing book to help her focus on her writing skills for third grade.
This book (and series) is great for us as a homeschooling family. My son easily follows the skill presented for the week and I see the result of his learning through his weekly writing piece. Very pleased!
I really like this book, and my students enjoy it also. It gives the students the opportunity to be exposed to writing skills on a daily basis without being overwhelmed. Daily 6-Trait Writing is very useful to my students who have challenges with their writing skills.
I purchased this book to use in our homeschool class with my third grader. It is 125 trait-based lessons that includes the teacher lesson plans, and the student page with the writing prompts. There is also a rubric that shows how the book recommends this to be graded. This book is a great resource for written work. Although children at this age don't need color, I personally prefer color on pages instead of plain black and white. My third grader is fine but I have a fifth grade autistic student who doesn't do well with written work; however when you incorporate other aspects such as color they seem to do better in areas that normally they have no interest in.The book is broken into five units: Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Voice. Each Unit then has Five weeks. Then each week has five days. As we homeschool we don't always stick to the Monday to Friday Schedule so we tend to use the book twice a week and do two of the days at one time and the other three at one time. We spend a little more time each time we are working in the book then it states is required.I love the fact this is both teacher and student manual as I am not in a position to pay the extra money to have both. The book is available for several grades starting with first and ending with 8th. We do incorporate other items along with the book as my children get bored with bookwork alone. I wish the book would give suggestions of other ideas and games as I do have to search and find them on my own.
Challenging for my 1st and 3rd graders. One page, daily lessons that flow along with each other. Not my kids favorite books, because they are challenging (especially my 3rd grader who has struggled with reading comprehension) . However, they are sprinkled with fun activities and leave lots to the imagination which I appreciate.
