My son loves this story! He is 14 months old, and we checked this out from the library 3 weeks ago. He has wanted us to read it to him every night before he goes to bed. It's perfect at bedtime, because it ends with the baby going to sleep after the most wonderful day you can imagine. Though it's Daddy's birthday party that's brought everyone to the house, baby is the one that everyone wants to kiss and hug.Helen Oxenbury's illustrations are incredible, the way the people seem to have real weight and personality. I especially love the baby, and there's one drawing of him holding his teddy bear, wrapped in his blanket, with his thumb in his mouth, which is EXACTLY the way my son looks when he's tired and sleepy, getting ready for bed. Of course, my son's Asian/Jewish, not African American, but this book is truly universal.
Baby is the narrator of the story, which explains the "poor grammar." Beautiful story of a family, gathering together to celebrate daddy's birthday while doting on baby. I too did not care for the cousin who wanted to [play] fight the baby, so I changed the words to my liking. Still, a beautifully illustrated and written story. My two year old loves it, and after owning this book for almost a month, he can already "read" it from front to back.
beautiful illustrations and depiction of a warm family life. it's a gathering for a surprise bday party for dad. It's unfortunate that they chose to use fighting as one of the verbs (when the cousin comes over to play). My kid is not yet able to read so I just change the words to play. What's the point of introducing the concept of fighting, even play fighting?
This book is poorly written with grammar errors throughout. The errors seem to have been intentional which makes it highly offensive that I would purchase a book only to teach my son incorrect English and how to become a statistic. To add insult to injury it encompasses several other incorrect stereotypes (mom in short dress, big cousin with butt crack out, incorrect English throughout, language that I'd never use "want to fight, want to fight the baby so much", "pow, pow" and the list continues. This book is WRONG on so many levels.
My wife and I are pretty disappointed with this book. Buy at your own risk, it's filled with grammatical errors, stereotypes and attitude. I'm sorry but I think "our" kids deserve better. I couldn't return this book fast enough! I wanted it out of my house that bad.
Love the illustrations but the grammar is so poor!!! I was surprised. Really basic errors. I could not tell if they were accidents or it was on purpose because the editors feel African Americans are supposed to speak that way? Either way was insulting. Had to send it back. Again great images but the grammar was too poor to overlook.
I have a habit of browsing bookstores in every place I visit and selecting a book each for my daughter (age 5) and son (age 1). I picked this book up in CA and loved it immediately! I knew it would be a hit with both the kids and it was. My son completely identifies with the "baby" and loves to point to him on every page. At the end of the story we all hug, kiss, and try to eat him! I am sending copies to my best friends. It's always great to see a lovable African-American tale.
My two year old absolutely loves this book! It was the first book he received 2 years ago and he really enjoys all the characters, especially Nannie, Gran Gran and Big Cousin Ross. I do change the language a little bit so that it's gramatically correct, but once I got over that obstacle, I really love it too. And we do read it every night. As a matter of fact, I had to order another copy because the first one got torn up by my son's little hands. Excellent addition to any library.
