Does just the thought of working any math problems make you want to run away from home? Join the club because a lot of kids feel the same way, but if they were as fun as a birthday party you'd probably want to learn them in a minute. Surprise! They can be as fun as going to a party. You're in luck because this book even throws is a clown, balloons, a birthday cake, pizza and even nickels for good measure.Each step of the way you will learn what fractions are and how they work. They aren't only seen in pizzas and birthday cakes, "fractions are found everywhere." For example if you are playing musical chairs and five kids are seated and two are left standing you have 5/7 of the crowd sitting ... "a fraction of the children is sitting." If you have a cake and divide it into "12 equal slices, then each slice is a part, a fraction of the cake. Each slice is 1/12 of the cake." The more you stay at the party, the more fun you have and the more you can learn about fractions. By the time you get to the end numerators, denominators, adding them, subtracting them and having an understanding of them will be a piece of cake!This book shows that learning fractions really can be easy and fun. This book should, however, be gone through slowly and carefully until each concept is learned. This illustrations are very vibrant, colorful and each point is clearly understood. For the younger child a bit of parental guidance would be quite useful and welcome. I liked the entire presentation and this book would be a welcome addition to any home, homeschool or classroom shelf. Math really can be fun ... if you want it to be!
You had been invited to a birthday party!!! Colorful illustrations that will teach fraction in an engaging way. Fractions are described as "a part of something". The book illustrates fractions through balloons, slices of pizza, pieces of cake, pages in a book and coins. Concepts as the numerator and denominator, equivalent fractions, multiples, simple addition and subtraction, and multiplying by one are explained in the book too. The fractions are also presented in ways that can be reproduce to teach the kids fractions in a more kinesthetic way as using sheets of paper and paper plates. A very fun way to teach fraction to young kids.
This book is an excellent resource for the 2nd and 3rd grader and their families who are learning fractions. The book has an excellent lay out and is very user friendly. I would recommend this product highly
This book does a great job explaining fractions in simple terms that even young elementary schoolers can relate to: balloons, kids at a birthday party, slices of pizza, slices of cake. It does a particularly excellent job of introducing what the top number means and what the bottom number means. It explains the concept and then introduces the vocabulary of numerator and denominator - very approachable and clear. Even the first and second graders who are in the early stages of learning fractions will like it. The clear explanations can be especially helpful to them for their early experiences with fractions - the sooner you get fractions the more you'll like them. I also appreciated that one of included hands-on act ivies uses 2 pieces of blank paper and 3 crayons. This gets the concept across to the kids without complicated instructions or a long list of craft items required. He also covers addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions in a very clear way. I will use this with children as young as first grade and go through just the parts of the book that apply to what they're learning. I'll keep this up through the end of elementary school and revisit it as they learn more about working with fractions.
