Well-written, character-driven novel set in one of the small Apostle Islands of Lake Superior. The plot and theme has a Dark Shadows feel, with a cast of characters living off of grandma's money, a large mansion, lots of dramatic twists, and numerous creepy occurrences. The back and forth romance between the main characters drove me crazy, and the development of the romance at the end was somewhat contrived. The main character struck me as a bit of a ditz for constantly running off into the woods alone when she knew her life was in danger. The story certainly held me and kept me turning the pages, but overall it was much too dark for my taste.
Windigo Twilight is a gripping, exotic suspense-filled tale that takes place on a mysterious island across the horizon from Lake Superior. A weathered mansion, massive pine trees along the cliff's edge, the sound of the surf crashing below, and rumors of the evil Windigo spirits all lend to the mystique of this dark, cryptic isle.Rebecca Baxter believes her parents' death due to an explosion on their boat is no accident, especially due to the fact that her estranged relatives would profit handsomely from their deaths. Changing her name to Becca Lynn she secures a position as a research assistant to writer, Max Duncan, on a practically deserted island in the middle of Lake Superior. Becca has not been to Windigo Manor since she was a small child, and is certain none of the remaining family members there will recognize her as she ferrets out information concerning her parents' death. Max Duncan is a handsome, brooding widower for whom Becca begins to feel a deep attraction in spite of herself. When eerie incidents begin to take place, Becca begins to wonder if she has been recognized. When someone frightens her in the woods dressed up as Windigo and her life becomes threatened, Becca unearths secrets she never wanted to find out. Someone wants her out of the way---permanently. And no one in Windigo Manor is to be trusted...including Max Duncan.Colleen Coble wrote this riveting novel under her maiden name of Rhoads in 2005, and had it republished in 2015. Full of exotic descriptive imagery, the reader will feel as though they are on a tropical island in the Caribbean or Tahiti instead of the United States. Filled with heart racing excitement and melodramatic tension that will send shivers up your spine -- there is never a dull moment in this whodunit! Throw in some romance and a spiritual thread throughout and you have a typical Colleen Coble novel--breathtaking!
Colleen Coble is a writer extraordinaire - her books are ALWAYS page turners and are nearly impossible to put down once you start raeding one...
I found this book to be a step down from Coleen Coble's other books. The pace was slow and did not pick up until the last couple of chapters. While those were exciting and suspenseful, I thought it was too little, too late.
Colleen Coble writes the best beach mysteries! And Windigo Twilight is no exception. You get to know the main characters and think you know what's going to happen and then, your wrong. I love the way the true love of God is woven through the stories of people's lives. A must read! Now on to book 2 in the Great Lakes series.
This is one of those older books by this author that she's dusted off and made available for Kindle. It's part of a series called Great Lakes Legends. The other two are called Storm Catcher and Shadow Bones. The end of this book lists Storm Catcher as book 2, but the order of them is reversed with the print books.Becca's parents died a few months ago in a tragic boating accident while visiting her estranged grandmother. The problems is, Becca doesn't believe it was an accident. She contacts her late cousin's husband asking for a job as a research assistant. Since she hasn't been to the island in years, she hopes the years have given her the advantage of not being recognized. The only person she really needs to worry about is her grandmother and she's out of the country.Max didn't have a happy marriage and the events surrounding his wife's death have made him an object of suspicion. He senses that Becca isn't what she seems, and he's determined to protect the family from an outsider with questionable motives.Attempts are made on Becca's life and she has to suspect Max, even though she doesn't really want to. He suspects that she's trying to weasel her way into the family for money purposes, so there's plenty of distrust around. Not everyone on Eagle Island is what they seem. This was a great story. It's on the short side, 197 pages, making it a light, diet read. I found it a little amusing that Becca would get so angry when Max suspected her of something when she suspected him of being a murderer numerous times. The other two books in this series are about Becca's brother, Jake, and sister, Wynne. I believe that these are stand alone stories. They're not out on Kindle just at the time of this review, but I'll be watching for them.
this book had me captivated from the first and trying to guess who was the culprit and I have to say that I couldn't work it out until the last moment which means it was a great mystery, I really enjoyed it, great reading, edge of seat entertainment
