Andre Pelletier's village is attacked & destroyed by the bluecoat soldiers. He is rendered unconscious by a bullet to the head & when he comes around the village is in smoldering ashes. He finds his youngest daughter Marie crushed by the horses of the soldiers. The women & children have fled to the river among the woods. There had been thirty lodges with a fighting force of perhaps forty men. Andre's son Pierre returns with the other young men after chasing the bluecoats unsuccessfully. With extreme wisdom Andre is able to reign in the anger of his sons & the other young men who are calling for death to all whites. He points out that the bluecoats are the guilty party & the Crow must learn to live peacefully among the whites for their own survival. Finally after much thought Andre decides to take the remaining women & children to a village on the Little Big Horn River where they will be safe. His women & children will go to his brother's valley & he tells his sons they & himself will return & fight. This is a volatile situation that only begs for one spark to ignite the whole of the West. It's not a question of "if" but a question of when & where.Cleanly written story that has kept me glued to the pages. This series pulls the reader completely into the adventure & you feel the pain, frustration & heartache of both sides. Simple words fall far short in attempting to describe the excellence of this story.I highly recommend to anyone!
I would like to recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a very interesting and exciting book where the action never stops. I am finding these books to be very difficult to put down. I will be looking forward to reading the next book from this author.

Excellent read. Tough to accept the attitudes of the period. Well presented.
