This 11th entry in The Garden Girls series is, another entry in what may reasonably be considered to have become a 1-star series. The writing is simple yet challenged (paragraphs consist of phrases or sentences such as "Victoria winked"). The plot structure and the character deficiencies, including of the main female protagonist (Gloria), are problematic. A forgiving and very generous reader might even be able to suspend some disbelief and judgments about smug, delusional, forgetful, deceitful, egotistical, ridiculous Gloria -- and the focus on food (and "her mouth watered" and that she places napkins on or in the plate when finished eating, about which we are told repetitively) -- until page 133...and then recognition of descent from the slippery slope of mediocrity to the flagrantly absurd may be unavoidably perceived by some. For example:p. 133 "Still, the thrill of the mystery outweighed her immediate concern for safety" (Gloria is mature, apparently, only in years.)"After all, no one had threatened them...yet. In addition Paul would be there to protect them." (Irresponsibility, egotistical delusional thinking, and the little dependent woman relying on her new husband (to whom she lies about her "investigations.")p. 143 and following: Gloria (the highly flawed Heroine) fractures her leg and that fracture is but an inconvenience for her. When alone she takes "a long, hot bath and was surprised how roomy the tub was. She was careful to keep her leg and the cast out of the water." (Our Gloria must have gymnastic abilities yet unheralded in a series when every movement is mentioned.) Indeed, at p. 146, Gloria --with fractured leg and cast -- "eased onto an end barstool.
