I am really pleased with this study guide. There are introductory descriptions of what is happening in each chapter of Daniel. Then there is a translation of the chapter, and verse by verse study notes (which no doubt were later inserted into the MacArthur Study Bible). But the best part of the study would have to b the excellent questions. There is always an introductory question that gets you thinking about some of the material in the chapter. then there are content oriented questions then application oriented questions.I have used Max Lucado's study on Daniel in the past, but it cannot even begin to compare with the richness of this study. This is the best study guide on Daniel I have come across. I am looking forward to using it for years to come.Rev. Marc Axelrod
The Book of Daniel was just completed by our men's Bible study. These MacArthur studies are great because they allow lots of discussion on the Bible subject as well as current and introspective topics. Daniel, in particular, was a wonderful study for the absolute miracle of his prophesy. Current readers suddenly realize the fantastic depth and scope of these prophesies, which reach forward hundreds of years from the time they were written in the 6th century BC and are all completed except for those of the Antichrist. This book will astound you! This book is not just about Daniel and the lions den. This is about prophesy that co-responds with the Book of Revelation. I also recommend the commentary on Daniel by Phillips and Vines.
These are very good and worth the money. They encourage student preparation and interaction, though we do not require it. I have beginners in the small group class we host, as well as very well trained Bible students, and we all like these books. I trust MacArthur's theology. I'm seminary-trained, but I did not want to conduct a class, where the listened were dependent of hearing from me. If you want to learn something, then teach it. I want to teach potential future teachers of the Word. This material uses the NKJV as a common text for the group. M does word study and adds depth and his usual background for the text. But, most importantly for us, it removes barriers and fear for a new teacher to step forward, using this material and becoming a teacher. Going to seminary is good, but it is not easily duplicable. This method is.
MacArthur does a great job of drawing together scripture and history with this study book. Each chapter is broken down verse by verse and has 1-2 line commentary for each verse to explain significance and to clarify meanings. Quite concise, doesn't have much "fluff" which is a positive to me. The book doesn't chase conspiracy theories or try and make claims that it can't back up scripturaly. The end of each chapter has a question section that tries to help with critical thinking which I thought wasn't very helpful, but I didn't by the book for that reason. I bought it to help explain the more complex concepts of Daniel. (Like the 70 weeks and the beast with the 10 horns)This is a solid study guide that draws together other pertinent portions of the Bible. If you want just the facts, this is the study guide for you.
John McArthur is noted for his in-depth exposition of the Bible. This is not one of his better efforts for the book of Daniel. Some of the questions asked do not fall in line with the scripture. For example he asks why do people have dreams? Or why do some people have more dreams than others. This has nothing to do with the dreams of revelation given to Daniel from God. I am keeping this book, but was disappointed in the content.
This disappointing purchase is a lightweight excuse for a commentary to be coming from a man with Macarthur’s reputation. More and better information can be found with a simple internet search. Probably 95% of the book is nothing more than a reprint of the scriptures, third-rate thought/discussion questions and blank sections for notes. Just my opinion, but please, before you part with your $10 be sure to utilize the “Look Inside” feature and make yourself aware of his meager attempt at commentarial remarks. Then decide for yourself.
This study of Daniel by John MacArthur is detailed and specific - well written with helpful information along with each scripture and lesson. It is not an easy or superficial glance at the book of Daniel, but a deeper look into the lessons therein to really understand its message.
I compared all the study guides available at our local Christian book store and bought the one I liked best. A member of our study group had selected the MacArthur study and, after using the MacArthur guide I decided I liked it better. Mostly, what has impressed me are the insights offered and questions asked. When we finish Daniel and proceed to another study I may consider another MacArthur study guide.
