Mr. Postmouse's Rounds
Ebooks Online

In this bustling picture book, Mr. Postmouse carefully loads up his wagon and sets off to make the day's mail deliveries to all the animals on his route. Via cross-section drawings, readers get to peer inside each home Mr. Postmouse stops at, and every one is different, depending on the animals who live there. For example, there's a hole in the middle of the kitchen floor of the Rabbits' home that leads underground to where they sleep and eat. Mr. Snake's superlong home has heat lamps throughout its length. The Birds live in a tree house, and Mrs. Octopus in a sunken shipwreck. Mr. Bear's house has a beehive on the roof with an attached pipe that brings honey straight into the kitchen. Furnishings in Mrs. Fly's home are stuck to the ceiling. Award-winning author and illustrator Marianne Dubuc is a master at clever, specific details in her drawings to bring each fully imagined animal and dwelling to life on the page. Though more whimsical and tongue-in-cheek than true, this is a terrific book for teaching children about the characteristics and diversity of animal life, including their habitats, their needs, how they live and what they eat. And it's also loads of fun. With so much going on across every spread, children will love poring over the pages on their own, discovering something new every time. Children are also likely to be inspired to create their own made-up stories about what activities are going on in each of the animal's homes in the book.

My three girls love to read, so I was very excited about the prospect of reading Mr. Postmouse’s Rounds to them. This delightful picture book was written and illustrated by Marianne Dubuc. The premise is simple: the reader is treated to watching Mr. Postmouse make his rounds through the neighborhood, which is a delightful place, with a wide variety of habitats. Mr. Postmouse delivers to the expected forest animals, but some of his customers live in the ocean, and others live on top of a snowy mountain. Mr. Postmouse does whatever it takes to make sure that the packages are delivered.Mr. Postmouse does not encounter any adversity along the route, although he is grateful that he doesn’t have to deliver anything to Mr. Snake! This book consists of watching Mr. Postmouse do his job, and the illustrations are what make this book truly extraordinary. I suppose the comparisons to Richard Scarry are inevitable because they both feature anthropomorphic animals, but Dubuc’s style is her own. The colors are more muted, and there are so many little details in each of the scenes. All of the houses are see-through, and what is going on inside the houses is always interesting. Mr. Bear has a pipe connecting his honey pot to the beehive on the roof. The penguins have a bathtub full of ice cubes. My girls especially enjoyed the rather cheeky illustration of the Rabbit family’s bathroom, complete with little rabbit pellets! There are also several cameos from fairytale friends. These are not stated in the text. After all, the focus of the book is on following a dedicated public servant. No, you will only see these fairytale favorites by looking at the illustrations.I would absolutely recommend Mr. Postmouse’s Rounds.
