I have read the original lone wolf and cub saga many times over and over again the last 12 years. It is the most epic story I have ever read. Many years ago when I saw there would be a sequel I was excited but cautiously optimistic. I didnt expect this book to be anywhere as great as the books that preceded it and it's not. Its a nice story that follows what happened to Daigoro after the epic battle between his father and the Yagyu. The writing is good and the artwork is also good considering the original artist has passed and they found someone with a similar style to pencil these books. If you have only read LW&C and nothing else by Koike and Gojima then I would recommend reading Samurai Executioner before starting down this journey. Overall, this book may need a while to develop but this is a decent start. But don't hold your breath waiting for it to blow you away.

I dread writing this review because I love Lone Wolf and Cub. So much so, when I was in the military, my call sign was Lone Wolf. Look at my name. It's not a coincidence. I loved the original series that much. But this series misses the mark . . . badly.I waited until the second issue arrived before I decided to voice my displeasure. I'd hoped the first book was a fluke. I must say the art amazes. If you didn't know any better, you'd think it was the same, and legendary, artist. For that, the work should get five stars. But it earns two . . . because of story. This is a case of 'leave well-enough alone.' With the original series, the plot and goal, for hero and villain, are as clear as can be. Both butt heads to reach their goals with some now classic conflicts and confrontations. That story ended with a question of what happened afterwards, and I believe, should've been left open. But it wasn't, and the mystery died. The new 'goal' is shifty at best, and the antagonists are . . . well . . . boring. Neither the protagonists nor antagonists' motivations make much sense. And, unfortunately, the new 'Lone Wolf' is a pale imitation of Ogami. He's not close. Nowhere near. And it kills me to write this, but I wish this new series never existed.Still, I'm hopeful. Maybe the series will pick up. Maybe the motivation will make more sense. Maybe. But, for now, they don't. So, if you're a new reader, I don't recommend this. If you want to know why fans speak of Lone Wolf and Cub with awe, read the original series. Bask in the glory that's considered the best of the best in its field. And leave this one behind.

New Lone Wolf and Cub Volume 2...Kazuo Koike is one of the most knowledgeable people on the Edo period in which his comic books take place. It's not just a great comic book it's a look inside of the Japanese mentality during that period using real and almost lost terminology. Definitely not for children.

Kazuo Koike is the best.

High level.
