I am a huge fan of Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices trilogy (Personally, I love them even more than her Mortal Instruments series). As soon as I heard that the novels were going to be adapted into Manga I rushed over to to preorder my copy of the Clockwork Angel manga. I was so excited to see that my copy had arrived yesterday. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I have skimmed through the manga and I have to say that the artwork is absolutely beautiful. It is so interesting to see another person's perspective on the physical descriptions of the characters of one of my all-time favorite novels. I want to make this clear that this is a MANGA, it is NOT a graphic novel. A manga is basically a combination of a graphic novel and Japanese Anime. I saw another reviewer on here criticizing this manga for the things that make it a manga. They obviously don't know much about manga. They were complaining that some of the artwork looked "babyish," these "babyish" figures are called Chibi. It is a style of artwork that is very common in manga and is used in scenes that are meant to be cute and/or humorous. Another thing that this same reviewer complained about was that the artwork is completely in black and white. Mangas are almost always in black and white. Personally, I think that that reviewer had ordered the free sample from one of the other sellers here on , because earlier this year the publisher had given out free samples of this manga that only included the first couple of chapters and another one of the reviewer's complaints was that it only covered up to the part where Will rescued Tessa from the Dark Sisters. The manga that I got is 240 pages long and covers the ENTIRE Clockwork Angel novel.
The Clockwork Angel graphic novel is a book that has sort of fluttered around the periphery of my awareness for awhile now, but overwhelmed with LIFE and reading commitments this year, it was a book that managed to slip through the cracks of my over-saturated TBR. And then I finished Clockwork Princess, and was doing my post-"Ohthefeels!" ritual that follows the end of any Cassandra Clare book which consists of trawling through the TID fanart that deviantART has to offer, when I was suddenly reminded that "Hey! There's a graphic novel! Lots and lots of Will, Jem & Tessa. I think I might want it. I think I might need it."I'm always a little apprehensive of seeing a beloved story come to life visually on paper or screen. What if the characters don't look like I imagined? What if the artist/actor/director doesn't grasp the subtleties and nuances of the characters and their relationships? What if they leave out or change vital pieces of the story? What if it's just done poorly? Will it forever change my mental image of the the way I imagined the world and the characters -- the way I look at the book?It's a risk. It might suck. It's inevitable. Then, that'll suck too. And maybe.So with all of those questions and fears hovering in the forefront of my mind, what'd I think of this graphic novel?That it was awesome. HyeKyung Baek brought Tessa, Will, and Jem's stories to life beautifully and brilliantly... and sometimes terrifyingly and creepily. It's like Baek took a peek inside my mind and translated my imaginings of Shadowhunters & Co. to the page, capturing them perfectly.
